I read that Mothers Day started by the ancient Greeks celebrating "Rhea","the mother of all gods". Pagan.
I would just give your mom love, gifts, kind words and happiness all year and forget about the so-called Mothers Day.

Well that would be rather nice but unfortunately I can't afford and my boy's can't afford to take me out for coconut shrimp everynight so I go out on mothers day and eat my favorite sea foods and deserts and call it a day.

    Ummmm. love that coconut shrimp!

I am really beginning to believe my friend is not a very "serious" JW. She either was never baptized, or is on her way out. She wished everybody a happy Mother's Day and told me her children gave her flowers.

This really surprised me, as I thought celebrating Mother's Day in any shape or form was a big no/no for JW's. Right?

From what I can tell you about it, I have noticed a lot of the mothers day stuff is taken more seriously in some parts then it is in others. I think it might also have something to do with how old a particular congergation may be. In regards to how long have members at a particular KH been members. It seems like the younger (not physical age but association age) the members are and the less time they have together history wise the more strict they seem to be with eachother. Thats just what I have noticed anyway.

Is it ok to send a friend or family member flowers to make them feel special, loved, etc while they're in the hospital?
Is this because it is not done on the same day every year? So it is not worship?
Do I have to be careful not to pick any pagan flowers in the arrangement?

you are not allowed to put anyone on a pedestal, even for one day, because it's like worshipping that person and only God can be worshipped, or something like that...

Funny that they never stop to think that they worship the WT at least 3 days a week.

I'm not, not ever was JW, so you have to understand that is the direction I come from.

The JW teenager I know has fed me the same line about not needing a special time when you HAVE to buy anyone a gift, but that you can do it anytime. So......I asked him when the last time he bought his parents or his brother anything. He thinks he MAY have given his Mom something when he was really little and he has never given his brother anything. His parents buy him things, but he has no idea how to choose a gift himself, or the joy of giving someone something intuitive and special..not necessarily expensive. I wouldn't say he is an extremely selfish kid, yet there is some sort of generosity that is missing in him. He has never been taught to give.

Mother's Day and Father's Day and Birthdays make us all slow down for a minute and stop and recognise the special people in our lives. Yes, we should all do it all the time, but a day set aside for it, makes sure that it happens.

That is exactly the problem, and why Hallmark, et al created Mothers Day and such. Card companies are in the business of getting people to give gifts, and people just WEREN'T giving enough gifts for them, so they 'created' a few holidays.

People - indeed ALL animals - are naturally selfish. Unless someone is TAUGHT to give, they won't.

And the watchtower and awake aren't the kind of things people want to have given them, sorry.

    Couldn't have said it better.
