That's because the higher-ups know that if they could, the subsequent mass exodus would leave the WTS a pale shadow of its former self.
Realizing this simple fact was one of my "a-ha" moments.

I can relate to what you are saying. A lot of us that grew up pre 1975 went through much the same BS. I learned 20 years ago that you cannot leave this JW cult quietly. The reason is that they do not want ou to influence the rest of your family and friends, otherwise the cult would eventually die.

The situation we have been in and the reaction of the organisation demonstrates the futility of their dogma. The witnesses are now facing (on this site and others) the fury of thousands of ex-witnesses properly annoyed by the interference of the WTS in their personal choice of life and their natural family connections.
In the age of the internet, this is plain stupidity. Their only increase will soon be in primitive areas without web access.
And, it is all avoidable - most of us would not be concerned with them if it was not for the fact that they once we were baptised, they thought they owned us and our families.
To avoid this situation, all they have to do is to allow resignations and to leave natural family connections alone.
The jehovah witness niggled my asshole on so many different levels.
