Should Government Dictate To Religious Organizations What They Must Do If It Violates The Beliefs Of The Religion?

If the Catholic Church doesn't want to support abortions in any way, I don't think she should be penalized by the government.

    Your thoughts??

If the Religious teachings of a certain group can cause harm to someone under 18, i.e. refusing some kind of nessesary medical treatment then a big...YES to your question.

Human Rights should always trump religious rights. Governments should make sure Human Rights are never trodden on by religions or anybody.

(Of course, Governments are often the worst offenders, but that does not mean they should ignore their responsibility, they need to live up to it).

The Catholic Church is hypocritical on this issue.

The Catholic Church was officially against the "unjust war" in Iraq.

Their members still had to pay taxes which supported the war.

If the Church is an employer and is required by the government to use insurance that provides for abortion or birth control as part of a government mandated requirement of all insurance companies then they ought to comply.

What are Christian Scientists going to do? They don't believe in ANY health care. Should they be exempt as employers from providing insurance?

IMO, Religion should be free to make illegal, things that the government say are legal, but is should not be allowed to make legal what the government says is illegal.

For example, with abortion or gay marriage, the government may allow it, but a religion has to right to prevent it amongst its members. However, with something illegal, such as murder, freedom of religion should not be used to allow it. This is how the system generally operates.

The grey area, which affects JWs, is when it is hard to determine exactly what the legal situation is. Should the Watchtower be allowed to prevent a blood transfusion, and does that constitute manslaughter? Should the Watchtower be able to enforce shunning, and does that break the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 12 which states:

“No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honour and reputation.”

How would the catholic church 'support' abortion?

Is that not an individual choice?

If the church ventures into the public square, and receives public money in doing so, it makes sense that they be held to the law of the land.

When you receive no government funding, you are free to pursue your mission. If this is about the Obama administration regulation, I agree with Obama's policy. It was handled in a very awkward manner. I am fed up with religion using my tax dollars to pursue their beliefs. It is time to separate church and state.
