The Christian versus the Agnostic

I think by most accounts, my previous posts have testified to my moving towards an agnostic stance. I just don't know and I can't believe for belief's sake. I came across a quote I thought quite timely in my journey.

"The Christian says that he has knowledge: the agnostic admits that he has none; and yet the Christian accuses the Agnostic of arrogance."

I think this pretty much sums up where I am at. For most of us, to question things of faith is considered arrogance or pride. Little do they know that it is the truest mark of humility.

Just don't know....Just don't know. You know what I do know? I am now totally ok with NOT knowing.

As a Agnostic, I don't know everything but when I was a JW I knew

    everything.

    @ jam

Yeah, it's just like when I was a teenage witness. I knew absolutely everything about everything!!!

Thomas Jefferson," He who knows nothing is closer to the

truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors".

That was a humbling experience for me to realize that my IQ

was at the level of a 10th grader. LOL

Do Christians accuse agnostics of arrogance? You sure you don't mean atheists? Anyway, I was also a teenage JW know-it-all. I really wince when I look back at that time. I've learned so much since then, and yet I really feel like my experience has just given me a better grasp of how many shades of gray there are, and how little I really know.

Hey, we all know their are only 50 , OK ? LOL

Seriously : Christians or most of them, think they have all the answers regarding religion, I thought I did as a JW .

I then went to being an agnostic , not being sure whether their is a God or not , to now identifying myself as an atheist .

Rejecting all those books that the Jews, Islamists,Christians ,put their faith in . Come on .....?

Different sects of Judaism ? ( multiples ) , Different sects of Islam ? (multiples ) Different sects of Christianity ? ( thousands ) ???

Are you people serious ? How can you can beleive a book as we have it today, written thousands of years ago by people who didnt have the education or life experiences of history as we have it today at our fingertips and not see the flaws of these texts.

    Hi SoP

After 60+ years as a JW (20+ as an elder) I can honestly say that I am much more at peace with:

"having questions that cannot be answered" than "having answers that cannot be questioned!"

    Just saying!

The Christian is like the little old lady who thinks she has money in her account.

The Agnostic is like the little old lady who tried to draw out the funds and they were never there.

The first instance is confident, optimistic, and secure.

The second instance is bewildering, but there's determination to get busy finding a way to pay the bills.

    @Terry

I don't know if I quite agree with your analogy. The first little old lady is delusional as she "thinks" that she has money in her account. There is no security in that. In fact, if she tried to pay her bills, her checks would bounce. The latter, however, knows not to write the check, because he is unsure.

There is only one thing that we can totally be sure of...that we do not know. Of that I am positive. I would like to add my own analogy...

The Christian is like the child that is good cause he believes Santa has a list of those naughty and nice.

The Agnostic is like the child that is good for goodness sake and doesn't know if Santa exists, but because he is good, will get presents anyway.

Atheists and Christians will disagree, but no one knows for sure. In effect, we're all Agnostics.
