The key ensuring compliance in an authoritarian system is to have a penalty that creates an emotion of dread in the majority of the populace.

The irs and cra create the fear of being audited, and in fact audit and make examples of a minority. This ensures that the majority file their income taxes in an orderly and scrupulous manner.

The rcmp or local sherif ticket a small percentage of non compliant motorists and make an example of them. All other drivers are thus afraid of getting a ticket

The watchtower organization disfellowships annually about one percent of their members The fear created by this action ensures the compliance of the other 99 percent.

And those who get reinstated are doubly trapped because they now have a huge investment in not being disfellowshipped again as they know the pain of being disfellowshipped. Which is why they encourage reinstatement - they get the claws in deeper.

Must remember that there are many religious organizations that disfellowship as well.

Power and control is the game in which the leaders of these organizations play, along with utilizing fear and guilt.

Emotional blackmail does work. It is the hallmark of all cults.

Public punishment and humiliation has been around since man has been in social groups.

The Bible references that Paul and Silas were put into stocks. Military deserters were put in stocks. So was the Puritan 'sinner' in colonial New England. Disobedient slaves were publicly whipped. For centuries persons have been hanged in public or nailed/tied to a pole/cross to die.

Today persons who break laws or social custom can receive public punishment. In the US a person can be given 'public service' hours or be assigned to a 'chain gang' with brightly colored clothes (or "I'm a drunk driver" shirt in some States). In Africa people are still publicly whipped, dismembered or stoned. In Southeast Asia, a lawbreaker can be publicly caned.

As a form of punishment with children, instead of receiving a spanking they are put in 'time out' or 'grounded' - banished from involvement in normal activities.

The same customs are practiced in religion.

I'd never thought of it that way before, but yeah, definately.

A key component of the WTS modus operandi specifically involves regularly making an example of a small number to keep the rest in line.

It explains why so many of the DFing offenses listed in the super-duper super-secret elders' handbook are so specific (with tenuous scriptural justification at best), and why that latest video for elders on DFing was so heavy-handed in reminding 'em not to go soft on offenders.

If an authoritarian high-control group initially had no "justifiable" reasons to shun, they'd eventually have to make some up.

Thank you for that innovative thought. It inspired me to post here an article titled:

JC is not Christian, nor a replica of what is in Heavens!

I've heard this principle as "Kill one monkey scare hundreds". A good part of enforcement works on this principle.

Dfd ones are used for only one purpose to set an example for the younger generation, and getting dfd is what will happen to them if they go against Jehovah!

I am a born in Jw and I became aware that after meetings overseer would make a special effort to talk with younger children and teenagers usually after an announcement of a recent disfellowship one.

It was always the same statements,"Becareful that you do not end up like her." Usually out of wedlock lady . He continued,"Do not speak with her, smile, you will be able to talk with her soon." At that time it was ok to smile at dfd ones!

I heard that almost for ten months. The lady got pregnant six more time, she had very nice children but got dfd every time. Heard the same thing over and over again. It stopped when I was in my teens, but I watched elders go up to other young children with their parents right next to them and give the same little warning. Until another became the example!

Did you ever noticed the sick talks about dfed ones? How sad they look and worldly. I remember one was before the memorial. They had everyone attend a special talk before the memorial. The speaker asked if they ever recall seeing how disfelloshipped ones look with worn out and torn clothes on! It was shocking that on memorial night they gave a special talk on disfellowshipped ones!
