It's true DFing works and makes ones scared to fall out of line, but it also turns people undergruond and makes them lead double lives. It causes unnescessary fear. It's terrible, and many who are DF'd are suicidle and some act on it.

Oh, yeah; and some become absolute experts at maintaining the pretense.

I think this creates a few long-term problems for the WTS...

    a) the overall honesty of the R&F becomes a steadily downward skewing average, resulting in a generally less ethical mambership, which manifests itself in increased unethical behavior (inside and out of the Org) that damages the WTS's already poor public image and erodes internal morale...

    b) the passive/agressive rebellion within the R&F against the increasingly hard-line decrees of the GB steadily climbs, which never bodes well for any authoritarian regime...

    c) the rank-and-filers who know TTATT but find themselves unable to speak out or leave increasingly resent the leadership, some as far as actively hating them.

As much as the WTS can manage (or even capitalize) on these circumstances, in the long term, they can only work to the Organization's disadvantage.

Vidiot - good point - this explains why they are so keen to get faders to DA or acknowledge they don't accept the doctrine so they can be disfellowshipped. I think they would classify them as shunning evaders - to use tax compliance terminology.

"Shunning evaders" - I like that.

I can just imaging the more hard-line BOEs fuming away; "Arrrgh! How dare he use evasive techniques that prevent us from disfellowshipping him!!!"

EDIT: Reminds me of something I read here a couple weeks back; it was suggested (can't remember who) that the GB may be pushing for younger and younger baptisms as a preemptive tactic to ensure that they can give the boot to teens and tweens who learn TTATT (since being unbaptized is a kind of loophole that some JW parents exploit to associate with their "unbelieving" grown children).

Oubliette-- why the photo of a public hanging? A warning to others, df'd ones are the warnings of today.

French guillotine in 1793-1795 had the same effect. 18000 people were publicly guillotined while the crowds were watching. This was way to make the population compliant and submissive to the government. It was the government that was terrorizing the population and created a system based on fear and denounciation officially named as a Terror. Every totalitarian system derives its legacy on fear. JW and WT work on the same principle, but the fear is not the guillotine, but the fear to be destroyed during Armageddon. The vivid images of brimestone and mass destruction forces the JW to submit to the will of the organization.
