I am glad being an elder or MS are not on my future career goals. Those family worship nights have to be the most painful family event ever. Don't the Mormons have something similar, although I think they can play games, as long as they are together doing something.

I agree with OnTheWayOut's comment.
When most are made an Elder, studies soon die off as they can claim they are too busy preparing parts and dealing with Elder stuff. Anyone made Ministrial Servant maybe more finatical, especially when they are striving to become an Elder.
When I was a child, family studies were torturous and always dreaded. Luckily, my parents did not adhere to a set schedule without soon dropping it. When it did occur, regardless of the age of the children, the study was always a full hour sitting upright at the kitchen table. It was an easy way to obtain an hour for each parent, often in the final week of the month when they did not do much door knocking earlier that month.

Raising my children as a good evangelical, my most effective family study activity was a sizzling round of Dutch Blitz. My daughter brought out the old deck at our last family gathering, and I smoked 'em all!
These cards are anabaptist approved carrying no occultish, kingish, or other suspicious symbolisms.

Seems like a good opportunity for people trying to wake their families up.
They could use it to do extra research on the various WT quotes.

A few years ago, when I actually shave a git about trying to "reach out" I asked what I had to work on to progress.
The eldurr whom I asked replied, "You have to accept responsibility." So I asked him in what way was I NOT accepting responsibility, as I carried out EVERY assignment that I was given "as if to Jehovah." His reply was, "That means you are just doing what you have to! IF you want to ever be appointed you HAVE to give impromptu talks on the TM!"
I asked, "How am I suposed to give those talks when there are two "fair haired boys" that the school overseer ALWAYS uses?" He said then, "Well you don't comment enough!" I asked, "So how EXACTLY am I supposed to comment IF I NEVER get called on by four out of six conductors?"
He said, "You're just making feeble excuses. THAT'S why I will NEVER recommend you!"
To sum up... HS has little if anything to do with appointments. Requirements are pulled out of their asses at the drop of a hat to suit their personal predjudices at the time. Actual written goals in the Bible will be twisted to suit those same personal predjudices.

I remember back in 2005 or so, there was talk about Family Worship night being a requirement for appointment. That was before the book study was elimated; they expected brothers to conduct a family bible study and it was supposed to be like a formal meeting. Everyone dressing up in meeting clothes and so on. Even if they were away on vacation for a week.

Some of the biggest tools I knew, were MS's on the elder fastrack. In other words, they just could taste that precious appointment, so they were ridiculously over the top about everything else.
Crazy.

Eh. They'll just lie like we all did when they asked if there was anything that would prevent us from serving...
"No, Brother. I'm an exemplary dub who never masturbates, looks at porn, drinks too much, listens to debasing music, etc etc etc..."

Yes, it's called "Family Home Evening." President David O. McKay, who introduced it, said, "No success in life can compensate for failure in the home." Rather than being a "home worship," however, ours is supposed to be fun. Family games, sorting out family issues, some scripture study if desired, but always beginning and ending with a prayer. Our night is generally held on Monday, but it can be any day during the week.

How would they know if a meaningful family study is being held or not? Maybe they plan on dropping by unannounced?
What if the brother is single and lives alone?
