I know my siblings (all-in dubs) buy scratch tickets regularly. but they see fit to call me out for any little thing. HYPOCRITES one and all of them.
Against the odds, the gambler seeks to predict an uncertain outcome and win the loser or losers’ stakes.
This is not the case with poker. At least not in such a linear way. It's not like rolling dice, there is definitely a skill involved in playing poker well, that is why good poker players win consistently and bad pokers players lose consistently. I would be willing to make the argument that a poker player can calculate the chances of winning a hand more accurately than investing on some random stock.
What would be the dollar figure that separates petty gambling with regular gambling. is playing 1 dollar a hand poker ok but buying a 2$ lotto 6/49 a disfellowshipping offense?
Yes, I checked my downloaded "Shepherd The Flock" book and there was the quote in section 5 par 32. I had not spotted it and it surprised me.
The last Judicial Committee that I was involved in, about the late 'nineties was a case of gambling. The P/O had told us that the miscreant was invlved in buying lottery scratch cards , so we formed the committee.
I was somewhat embarrassed to find that that this lad was guilty of nothing more than making a charity donation, once, which entitled him to a scratchcard draw......Really , this was petty. Anyway we let him off with firm counsel and I had words with the P/O for not giving me the full story. Also there were family frictions which , I believe, caused his cousin to 'grass him up'
It was another nail in the coffin of my faith in the WTS.....
I agree about poker being a game of significant skill but try telling that to an elder. In some ways the same can be applied to all forms of gambling in that if you know how to, for example, read the form of horses then you can make a pretty educated estimation of which horse is more likely to win.
The problem then becomes one of semantics about how much skill, expertise and caution has been applied to make the likelyhood of winning a hand, predicting which horse will win or which team shall be superior etc. all but a formality and how much is guesswork, a punt or simply throwing good money after bad.
The WT seem unwilling to apply that logic to stocks and shares, where anything goes as opposed to what to the R&F is a blanket ban on any form of gambling. Except it's not quite.
Of course they have a point about the addictive nature of gambling, the harm that it does etc. but that does not prevent them from condoning plenty of other activities, notably the consumption of alcohol, that can be abused.
We couldn't sell raffle tickets that the school gave us to fundraise when I was a child because that was considered to be gambling. I remember taking a book of raffle tickets to the headmasters office and giving them back. Very frightening.
I can relate because I won 50k with a free ticket from McD when I was still in and a MS. I did some research in the publications to get "Jehovah's" view on the matter. The oldest articles stated that it was left to your conscience to accept or not since technically you hadn't wagered any money to acquire the ticket. The most recent article reversed "Jehovah's" view by saying the money was raised through a disaproved activity and accepting the prize money would be like accepting diamonds as a gift knowing they were stolen. I seriously considered not claiming the prize not to lose my service privileges. This got me thinking of another situation where it is OK to accept blood fractions acquired through blood donation...an activity disaproved by God... One year later I found TTATT and left the cult and I am very happy I didn't forfeit the money as it would have been another poor decision made under the wise guidance of the WT.
Its funny when i went to my wife about what i learn about the mediator and new covenant she immediately ran and called the elders. Before this though I had been playing tournament poker and she never said a word. Maybe its because I bought her a car, computer, bed, washer, dryer, dishwasher, etc etc with the winnings
That's funny crazy guy...my wife is still in and she hasn't said anything either...we kept it a secret from our JW friends.
