I thought this was worth sharing.

Where did the interpretation of Gen 49:27 come from ?

    Who said it first?

    TMS review question 4

How did the tribe of Benjamin eventual- ly fulfill the prophecy at Genesis 49:27? [Mar. 24, w12 1/1 p. 29, box] In the “morning” of Israel’s kingly history, Ben- jamin’s descendants included a mighty warrior, King Saul. In the “evening” of that royal history, after the sun had set on Israel’s kingly line, Esther and Morde- cai, both of the tribe of Benjamin, fought effectively against Jehovah’s enemies. In a sense, they also divided spoil, in that Haman’s vast estate went to one of them.

An exerpt from John Gill’s Exposition on Gen 49:27,,,, ( 1697-1771)

Some apply this to particular persons of this tribe, as to Saul the first king of Israel, who was of Benjamin; and who as soon as he took the kingdom of Israel, in the morning, in the beginning of that state, fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, Ammon, Edom, the kings of Zobah, and the Philistines, and the Amalekites, 1 Samuel 14:47 and to Mordecai and Esther, who were of the same tribe, who after the captivity, and in the evening of that state, divided the spoil of Haman, Esther 8:1 this is observed by Jarchi, Aben Ezra, and Ben Gersom.

    There goes the WT again...

    Yep.

I've recently completed reading the Book of Jasher and the Book of Jubilees.

The compilers of the New World Translation borrowed from both of those books.

I'm curious why you (or was it they?) would use a commentary that is so old to learn what a scripture means. 1771 was before America rebelled against Britain. Of course, there's nothing inherently wrong with using such an old source, but it is the kind of thing that Freddie Franz loved to do. No doubt he was afraid to take a serious look at modern scholarship, and in many ways the WTS is still frozen in this kind of thinking. Have you looked at any sources that are more recent?

From a Christian and spiritual perspective have you considered the fact that the apostle Paul was from tribe of Benjamin (Phil 3:5)? Surely his converting many Jews to Christianity could be viewed as "dividing spoil." Doubtless some early Christian writer, or some Reformationist or post-Reformation commentator, must have latched onto this idea.

    Just a thought...

Genesis Chapter 49 is being fulfilled right now!

In the final part of the days.

The 12 "end time" sons of Jacob are here.

10 of them have given their power to the wild beast and rule one hour with it.

The other 2 are standing before the Lord. (the two witnesses)

    Genesis 49:1-2

Later on Jacob called his sons and said: "Gather yourselves together that I may tell YOU what will happen to YOU in the final part of the days. 2 Assemble yourselves and listen, YOU sons of Jacob, yes, listen to Israel YOUR father.

I once included a quote from a 1950's WT in a public talk and was taken to task by a former CO who was present for using such an old source. When I protested by saying well it is a WT Publication he commented " ....Yes but we dont need to go back that far..............."

I was already in "fence-sitting" mode at that time so this just reinforced my views.

I have found numerous very close similarities with WT info correlating with older commentators - esp Matthew Henry.

But so what? Where does it say that each and every verse of the Bible has to be given a completely new interpretation or comment? Why does it have to wrong to say what a verse says, just because it has been said earlier? So Gill said something, and Henry said something - does that mean that you have to say something completely different?

Isn't the point that the WT pronounces itself as making all these pronouncements because they, and only they, are god's spiritual channel...when in fact, they do not get this information from god but plagiarize earlier sources...

Yet when one of the R&F does the same, they are taken to task and told "it's too old"...

Just further evidence of hypocrisy and making it clear they are NOT guided by holy spirit but by their own desires for power.

Some of these teachings go so far back that I think the WT have forgotten where they come from.

The same thought was also in an earlier WT:

*** w62 7/1 p. 407 par. 65 Fellow Rulers with the “Lion of the Tribe of Judah” ***
Like a wolf that eats in the morning the animal seized, the tribe of Benjamin provided the first king over Israel, in the morning of the kingdom of Israel. This king was Saul the son of Kish, and he was a fierce fighter against the Philistines. (1 Sam. 9:15-17) Moreover, like a wolf that at evening divides the spoil from its hunt, so in the evening of the nation of Israel the tribe of Benjamin provided Queen Esther and Prime Minister Mordecai for the Persian Empire in the days of King Ahasuerus.

    TheOldHippie But so what?

An honest organisation would credit the source instead of masquerading as the source.
Theologically this means that Gill was directed by the Holy Spirit to understand this prophecy. Therefore the Strict Baptists were then God's channel for communicating this truth, and this was done prior to the FDS arriving in 1919. If Jesus didn't arrive until 1914 then who gave this understanding to John Gill and why is it still correct?

It undermines the WT statement that we cannot understand the Bible without the aid of the FDS, don't you think?
It also makes you wonder what other teachings we have adopted and retained from Babylon the Great.
