Does Christianity Need The Bible

I can easily see a time when many of the "christian" religions distance themselves from the embarrassing god of the Old Testament, and drop the O.T as part of their Sacred scriptures, that has already happened to a great degree amongst the more progessive groups, they rarely refer to the O.T , and if they do it is in the form of using an incident from it as a parable.

The problem with doing away with the N.T would be that there is little outside of it that has even a tenuous link to the historical Jesus. Admittedly the N.T itself is myth and fiction written long after his death, but it is still closer in time than other writings.

How could you "follow" Christ if you knew nothing of him ?

Phizzy, I keep saying Christians only need the gospel accounts,We are followers of Jesus. But the OT brings purpose and meaning to the NT. The book of Revelations and Paul's writings I can do with out!

    Does Christianity Need The Bible

Yep, when I carefully measure what is happing in the world and realize that everything that Jesus Christ said would happen, is really happening, I am in complete awe!

How could someone who about 2000 years ago foretell what would happen and be so exactly correct?

The bible has helped me understand that he deserves all the glory!

Without the bible, what is happening in the world would make no sense.

"During the Protestant Reformation , certain reformers proposed different canonical lists to those currently in use. Though not without debate, see Antilegomena , the list of New Testament books would come to remain the same; however, the Old Testament texts present in the Septuagint but not included in the Jewish canon fell out of favor. In time they would come to be removed from most Protestant canons. Hence, in a Catholic context, these texts are referred to as deuterocanonical books, whereas in a Protestant context they are referred to as the Apocrypha , which means "hidden", the label applied to all texts excluded from the biblical canon but which were in the Septuagint. It should also be noted that Catholics and Protestants both describe certain other books, such as the Acts of Peter , as apocryphal ."

Seeing as the list of what books are canon or not was seemingly unsettled in to as late as the Reformation, I think it plausable in the light of modern scholarship, that Christianity may continue as a pursuit of spiritual truth, which the Bible seemed to provide, but now arguably does not.

Sarah, my relatives only know what is told in WT and Awake. They will look into bible only when required with selective text in the publication. They will never read bible from cover to cover. If I mention that is something written in bible they will first look in publication before they will open bible. When I was visiting them last summer, I had regular newspaper where there was a nice article about Jesus and [promiscous] Samaritan woman at the well. This is one the most known story of NT, yet my JW relatives were absolutely clueless that it was in John 4. It is probably a story that WT rather not to mention because it involves Jesus who did not condemned woman who was in concubine relationship with another man. WT utilizes only small portion of Scriptures, mostly related to doomsday scenario and this is sufficient for the masses of WT followers.

The Gospels contradict each other so what exactly are you following that is accurate and true?

Christianity was determined by Paul and not the gospels. There are other forms of Christianity in the East and India. I'd like to see where their emphasis is. When I was younger, I wanted Paul resurrected so I could spit in his face about the status of women. I can't explain it but I heard the line about wine and Timothy so many times at KH I wanted to puke. My family members would repeat it.

There are so many beautiful, soaring scriptures that the Witnesses ruined for me. I don't like certain translations now. English can be a beautiful language.

The "scriptures" in the first century was the OT only, and that was in the form of the greek translation known as the Septuagint, which came to be a 'Christian' book, and which had a few important variations to the masoretic text.

To whatever extent documents that eventually formed the NT were in existence, they were unlikely to have been in common circulation.

OK i gotta comment about the guy that said.... "those beliefs "intrude" on the world in which we live"....I am a salesman. I HAVE SOLD PRODUCTS DOOR TO DOOR FOR CABLE TV...listen buddy, this is AMERICA..and IN AMERICA, people will knock on your door. For religion, for donations, for trick or treat, for sales, if youre old enough, for girl scout cookies (they were as frequent as there were members in your area. they had no organized way, it was just moms going to houses)

COMPANIES START by bulk mailings, Street sales, AND religious groups grow by evangelizing...AND THE USA is the BIGGEST OF ALL, and they did it with bombs. I bet you all are pro army. those men invade people's crap, because some president wants the oil below their feet, spewing about "saving freedom".

I AM AN AMERICAN, and in america? We have people bringing us things to our doors, we have people calling us on the phone, we have pop ups on websites, and commercials on videos we cant skip over... GET THE FLIP OVER IT AND GET THE FREAK OVER YOURSELVES because one flippin day??? YOU MAY HAVE TO TAKE A JOB THAT MEANS YOU KNOCKING ON DOORS, and having people LIKE YOU talking crap about people "intruding" on your precious PORCH!!

BUT WHEN THAT PRODUCT, OR FAITH, OR NON PROFIT, or what ever it is, grows to start doing some good for people? THEN its all good, right? EVERY PRODUCT, has haters, and lovers. EVERY FAITH has the same, EVERY non profit has people that think its a waste of money giving them subsidies, and others that think they were blessed to have their help.

YOU people are the type that would turn America into a Communist land..where YOU can MAKE others do as YOU want them to do, and KILL the very thing that makes the country what it is....INTERACTIONS.

YOU would be the same people saying "dont FORCE me to accept bussed in people I dont particularly want to associate with in school"

YOU would be the people with the gated community, that would not only stop ANY from knocking on your doors, You would Hypocritically USE PRODUCTS INSIDE THAT GATED COMMUNITY that started with door to door sales..LIKE ALARM COMPANIES!!!

GET OVER YOURSELVES.... I know you people want to heap doo doo on JW's but seriously...Youre also the same people that would be on NO CALL lists and all that other nonsence.. THIS IS THE USA....if you dont like it...LEAVE IT...I hear IRAN needs people..OR MAYBE THE WEST BANK?

YES Im laughing AT you at this point. Its like youre a bunch of crybabies. I TRULY HOPE you have a SON OR DAUGHTER that is in school, and needs a job and has to knock on doors..to people that JUST HAD A COMPETITOR knock on the door LITERALLY A COUPLE DAYS PREVIOUS...and I TRULY HOPE another one of your members, come in contact with your kid, and then have them get yelled at and doors slammed on them... I KNOW youre gonna say its JUST JWs you dont like coming to your door..but that is a flippin lie! by the way you people talk? youre the SAME jerks that talk crap to me when I have an AT&T book in my hand, trying to get sales and feed my family.. So i dont wanna hear it.
