Though I agree that this is not original, and is a rule in all the 'mainstream' religions, I have to disagree wth your reasoning. From my point of view, this scripture was never that specific.
It was more about respect, and empathy; ie, caring about the other person's feelings. Here's an example (like yours about hot peppers (oh, btw, bring it on, yeah, love my hot food!):
Xmas is coming up, and I am making a gift for my friend. My preference would be to buy a gift, but she likes homemade ones. So, applying the golden rule ........... I would like HER to give me a gift I'd like, so I 'do unto her what I would like' ............ I honour her wishes and make her a gift instead of buying one. That is showing her the respect and empathy I would like to receive back ... it's not giving her the Belgian chocolate that I would like as a gift, it's giving her what she wants.
Sometimes, perception is everything.
