Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life..." What is the JW perspective on this passage?

How important is the phrase, "I am" to JW's, when it is spoken by Jesus about himself?

My elderette wants to examine this scripture (John 14:6) together next week. I'm wondering what rabbit she is going to pull out of her hat.

Is she somehow going to use this statement to build another argument that Jesus "really" meant that we had to get to him through some other channel?

It seems that she likes to build arguments on "common sense" a lot. I'm wondering where she is going to go with this verse...

It all comes down to the belief that Jesus appointed a "Faithful Slave" in 1919, and the Watchtower represents that Slave. In this view, to go against the Slave and its representatives is to go against Christ.

I would suspect an answer that the verse was written for the 144,000. I would respond with a question about who the mediator is for the great crowd, followed by asking whether 1 Timothy 2:5 agrees with that comment.

"I am the way, the truth and the life...No one comes to the father except through Me, then the Governing Body, then the loacl Branch office, then the local Travelling overseers, then the local Elders, then through the next CO visit, then through the Branch office again, then back to the Governing body, then back to Me/Jesus, who will wait for instruction from the Governing Body on what I should do next, then we will let the Governing Body tell us (Jesus and Jehovah) what we should do, then we will ask the GB what next......oh hang on...I'm confused....who's in charge here, is it my father Jehovah or is it me, Jesus or is it 8 men, oh no thats right, 7 men??????"

    ETC!

Hi Faithful Witness, I don't know how Miss K will try to twist John 14:6, but I feel that you can turn the tables on her by insisting on reading all of John 14 (especially the highlighted passages below) instead of cherry-picking scriptures, and asking her two questions. Why do Christians need an organization when Jesus Christ promised that God would send Christians the Holy Spirit to guide them? Why does the WTBTS write so much about what the WTBTS believes a "True Christian" should follow, when Jesus Christ said obey his teachings in John 14:23?

IMHO if Christians follow God's Greatist Commandments in Mt 22:37-40 they will live a happier and more productive life than blindly following other men or only loving money/power.

Peace be with you and everyone, who you love,

    Robert

    John 14:15-30 (NIV)
    Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be [ c ] in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

22 Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”

23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.

25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

28 “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. 30 I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold over me, 31 but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me.

    “Come now; let us leave.

When I was a JW I believed in the passage. Although Franz and Knorr held considerable power I didn't see them as some Pope.

I always had a hearts regard for Jesus (Eshua) and I was ever dismayed at his 'absence' from meetings. I was asked to do a final prayer once (I am totally sure what i was to say was being noted) and I included the "lords prayer". Given those born 'in' it must have been the first time they heard it. Oh and no comments either were forthcoming.

Possibly if you have recently discussed some teachings that did not sit well with you.. She will lead off with John 6:68 - "

Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life,"

This is a valid argument on the Elderettes behalf, because if their are teachings that We do not understand that come from Jesus, we should not look to follow someone else.. But, she will try and rephrase the scripture to "where else shall we go" by doing this she will lead into, the "fact" that JWs are the only ones that teach the Truth of Everlasting life.. Etc,etc.

If she uses the approach, it is a perfect in for you. In addition to John 14:6, here are some other scriptures that will help you.

John 11:25 - "Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die;"

John 10:9 - "I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture." (This is complementary to Matthew 7:14 narrow is the gate) You can emphasize that there is only ONE Gate -

John 10:1 - "Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber.

To Examine John 14:6 : "The Way" - 1 Timothy 2:5 - "For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus," Through his Sacrifice, he made a way for all sinners to approach his father. 1 John 2:6 - "whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked." Jesus is the Way in 2 ways.. 1 He is the Mediator for us, to approach Jehovah 2. His life is an example for us to follow.

"The Truth" - John 1:17 - "For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ." / Romans 6:14 - "For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace." / John 8:32 - "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." The source of truth, or he who originates and communicates truth for the salvation of men. Truth is a representation of things as they are. The life, the purity, and the teaching of Jesus Christ was the most complete and perfect representation of the things of the eternal world that has been or can be presented to man.

Anything that is taught beyond what Jesus Taught, does not hold up.. He did not come to create a new set of laws, that are burdensome, he came to release us from Law, and to give us Grace. Matthew 11:28-30 "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

29Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

"The Life" - John 11:25 - "Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live,"

John 5:26 - "For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself."

John 5:21 - "For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it.

John 6:50,51 - "This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die.51“I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh.”

1 Corinthians 15:22 - "For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.

1 Timothy 4:10 - "For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe."

Now.. If you really want to make the Elderette think, here are some thoughts..

If she is not Annointed, ask her "Why isn't Jesus the way and your Mediator?" ... Possibly she will say, that he is her Mediator.

Watchtower 2008 12/15 pp. 12-16 13 What does Jesus’ role as Mediator involve? Well, Jehovah applies the value of Jesus’ blood to those being brought into the new covenant. In this way, Jehovah legally credits them with righteousness. (Rom. 3:24; Heb. 9:15) God can then take them into the new covenant with the prospect of their becoming heavenly king-priests! As theirMediator, Jesus assists them in maintaining a clean standing before God.—Heb. 2:16. (The new Covenant in JW Doctrine refers to the 144,000 - Anyone whom is not of the 144,000 does not have Christ as their Mediator) w79 11/15 pp. 24-27 Benefiting from "One Mediator Between God and Men"

Today, according to authentic records, there is a "great crowd" of dedicated, baptized Christians who actively collaborate with the small remnant of spiritual Israelites. Ever since the spring of 1938 they have been invited to attend the annual memorial celebration of Christ?s death, not to partake of the memorial emblems, the unleavened bread and the red wine, but as respectful observers. They recognize Jesus Christ as their heavenly King since the Gentile Times ended in 1914. They zealously join the remnant of spiritual Israelites in preaching "this good news of the kingdom" in all the inhabited earth for a "witness to all the nations" before this system of things ends in the coming "great tribulation." (Matt. 24:14, 21) They recognize that they are not spiritual Israelites in the new covenant mediated by Jesus Christ, nor part of the "chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation."?1 Pet. 2:9.

See this post for more facts : http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/watchtower/beliefs/88855/1/Jesus-as-the-mediator-for-the-144-000-only#.U2ZVXtS9KK0

For The Truth, ask her why the Watchtower says that the Bible is not sufficient, to understand the Truth.

1 John 2:27 - "But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him."

"But Jehovah God has also provided his visible organization, his "faithful and discreet slave", made up of spirit-anointed ones, to help Christians in all nations to understand and apply properly the Bible in their lives. Unless we are in touch with this channel of communication that God is using, we will not progress along the road to life, no matter how much Bible reading we do."Watchtower 1981 Nov 15 p.27

For The Life, ask her why Jesus is not life for all men.. And only Jehovah's Witnesses

"The other sheep should never forget that their salvation depends on their active support of Christ’s anointed “brothers” still on earth. " (w12 3/15 pp. 20-24)

Salvation Does not come through a Man, it only comes From God through his Son. Acts 4:12 - "12 Furthermore, there is no salvation in anyone else, for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must get saved.”

: ) Let us know how it goes please.

You should be prepared for her to talk about Jesus' "other sheep", and the "unnumbered multitude" next to the "144,000" in Revelation 7. Both of these used as support for the JW teaching of two hopes. Most JWs have probably never even heard the simple suggestion that these are the Gentiles, and Jesus' "this flock" and the "144,000" were the Jews who accepted Jesus before the way was opened up for Gentiles too.

Apo- that is just as narrow an interpretation as any of the other dozen or so views on soteriology.
