Very interesting....thanks for sharing. If the US started looking into shunning and JC's they would also have to look at Scientology, the Amish and Mormons. Which would be a good thing.

In a nation where believers are fading the time of unlimited religious freedom and allowing it's most harmful beliefs to prosper needs to be discouraged.

I am reminded of the Shaker's. The continuation of their faith was dependent on two things. That people would join them freely, worship and work for their daily bread and accept that even married couples would live in separate dormitories and refrain from sex.

The second most vital aspect of Shaker life was that the state allowed them to adopt children from orphanage's. Eventually the states denied religions the opportunity to adopt children...........within a couple of generations the Shakers reached a point of no return.

It's not so much that a church doesn't have a right to follow it's moral standards but that they will CONTINUE to punish the individual and their believing family members long after the individual has removed them self from their religious authority and community.

Other religions that don't shun have showed far better growth in the same general time frame.

I'm told by ex-Mormons that the Mormons were, in fact, successfully sued in the U.S. over shunning practices. Since then, they say the church has stopped pushing that doctrine but many Mormons shun ex-Mormons anyway. There was a different basis for their lawsuit than that used in JW cases, but I don't remember now what it was. :(

Praise Jah! lol This is very good news we hope it spreads quickly to other civilized countries. Government pressure may force Jehovah to reveal "nu-lite" to the gb!

    just saying!

Since Finland is a member of the EU and therefore follows its guidelines regarding religous freedom, one can only wonder how far this inquiry will go. I imagine that the WTS Legel Dept. will be watching this one!

If the government gets involved and tells little old WT to stop shunning, what will they do? They will simply stop saying it from the platform but continue to pressure the active members to continue shunning without the announcement.

AT THE END IS STILL THE SAME RESULT

suavojr - "If the government gets involved and tells little old WT to stop shunning, what will they do? They will simply stop saying it from the platform but continue to pressure the active members to continue shunning without the announcement."

Oh, sure; they might dial down the rhetoric in the publications and from the platform, but "unspoken rules" have been a WT mainstay for decades.

The real problem is that the fundamental contradiction between crusading for "religious freedom" whilst refusing to observe it internally is becoming increasingly apparent, and bad PR isn't something any established corporation wants.

A more interesting possibility is the potential effect on the R&F if/when they dial down that rhetoric.

Many of the less resolute could interpret that as "permission" to reestablish contact with XJW family members, which would, of course, open up a very uncomfy can of worms, particularly if some were willing to listen to the reasons why their wayward relatives might have left...

Of course, there's a good chance the more hard-line elements on the GB will dig their heels in and refuse to budge, but that can have advantages for the XJW community, too; dogmatic inflexibility pushes more and more people to the other side, these days.

When certain European countries banned spanking of children the WTS adjusted/edited the publications on that.

Precisely. Most likely they will leave it up to congregation elders to enforce it, so the organization is protected. If nothing is printed publicly, they can simply argue that individuals chose on their own to do it.
