QuestioningEverything
If one of my loved ones was a victim of a violent crime and it was proven beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant was guilty, i would not blink an eye at their execution. I don't think that they deserve to live and i certainly don't want to pay for their long term stay in prison.

I also want to say, as a Court Recorder, I am in the courtroom during all types of trials-both civil and criminal. One particular trial was a murder case. The victim was a 2 year old little boyand he was beat to death by his mom's boyfriend.
That poor baby was battered to death. He had bruises on top of bruises, a lacerated liver, bruising on his lung and heart and cigarette burns all over his body and these are not all his injuries! The pictures were devastating to see. I cried when i left the courtroom that morning.
The guy who did this does not deserve to live. He is a demon, a monster. I would feel no sympathy whatsoever if he was to be executed.
And again, i don't want to have to pay my hard earned money for the upkeep of this monster in prison.

I don't believe in the justice system from experience. I think innocent people get convicted all the time. I think it's very common and hushed up a lot. I would love my ex to be convicted for his crimes and suffer the consequence of death so he can never abuse us again, but I don't believe in capital punishment because there is just too much room for error.
Richard Marks would never have written this song and had success if he was put to death, I believe him that he was innocent and was a scapegoat.

In Texas, anyway, and it ain't even hushed up all that much.

Yup, that's the fly in the ointment.
That being said...

It's hard to argue with "mad dogs need to be put down" when you hear stories like that...

It's not about whether we feel sympathy for the killer. It's a question of what is more beneficial to society. These individuals have something wrong with them. No healthy person, by definition, would be a cold-hearted killer. So if you can fix them and send them on their way to be productive members of society, it's better than killing them. It could also be argued that there is something "spiritually" damaging to the human nature of a society when people are put down like animals. Unfortunately prison seems to be a terrible way to "fix" criminals.

The Chamber by John Grisham is also a good read.
Some people deserve the death penalty. Child abusers, paedophiles and the like.
But, then in the cases of terrorism offences, that could make them martyrs?
There has to be a suitable deterrent for criminals. Jail is just too easy.
£38,000 to keep a prisoner in custody per year. Free board and lodging, no council tax, free healthcare, sky tv.
I could book in for 2 weeks all inclusive!

The death penalty is not a deterrent. Look at the muder rates per head of population in the states that have the death penalty in the USA compared to UK or Sacandanavia.
