Thanks KateWild ... If that was the $64,000 question... I would have bombed out. lol

Sweater - Jumper... Am I missing something here??? How can someone understand jumper to be a sweater???

I understand things like "torch" aka flash light, and Carriage Way as road way .

Maybe jumper is like the car part you call bonnet. I think "bonnet" means the back or American trunk of the car. I do not understand why it is called bonnet , though.

I do appreciate UK'er's (is that a word?) writing on this Board. Seeing how you use some written words I can see how Americans, shortened words like your whilst to our while.

True English from England, is beautiful to hear and read. The Southern, American regional language is fun to hear and read> (Think Mark Twain, lol and Gone With the WInd).

I love hearing all the different accents. I was 6 years old when we visited my Texas relatives. They had me in stitches laughing at how they talked. I thought they were putting on an " act " for us, but it was very odd to hear, people at the stores (shops) talk the same way. Very interesting for a child to hear.

Now I better understand the OP. And no, I actually have never seen a brother out in service wearing a jumper/sweater.

Thanks for clearing it up. lol

Here in the UK we also wear a Jersey (not open at the front), a Guernsey (Pronounced Ganzi) which is very similar, and Cardigans (open with buttons).

In the Tour de France, the race leader wears the 'Yellow Jersey'.

Lois - Bonnett is the front (hood), Boot is the back (trunk)

The term that really get's some Americans confused is fag. Apparently the idea of smoking a fag is quite funny.

Limeys tend to smile when they hear the need of a "tow truck" (mind thinks toe truck).

Yes, of course... bonnet and boot. Clearly understandable. Do you guys say those words, like, all the time? Sorry I have never been to the UK. So if you are going on a picnic you say, lift the bonnet and check the oil, and put the picnic basket in the boot and everyone understands what you mean?

------>> Yes. Fag is an old fashioned slang word that means homosexual. I don't know how that word came about.

I understand shops is better understood, than stores. I don't understand biscuits for cookies. Growing up, did you not have homemade chocolate chip or peanut butter cookies for lunch with say a piece of fruit for dessert? Biscuit is biscuit like homemade for breakfast with butter and jam to have as a side with eggs, and ham or bacon. I love waffles but have them very seldom. I put fresh pecans in them as I cook them in the waffle maker and serve always with real maple syrup and butter, or whip cream and strawberries.

Sorry ^^^^^ Bad Girl... I am off topic.

I'm still trying to understand how those US Southern accents (think the Carolinas) descended from the Scots and Irishmen who settled there. It's a stretch....

I've heard the term "jumper" for years, and know it means sweater. And I understand that a sweater can make you sweat, but can a jumper make you jump?

If they are going to waste the time pushing damnation books on people, at least they should be dressed comfortably. As much as wearing just a bathing suit is inappropriate if it is 50 below and one is sensitive to cold, wearing a full suit is inappropriate when it is 40 above (C) and one is sensitive to heat. As with pushing any product, it is more important to wear clothing that is in good condition, in colors that do not blatantly clash, and wear them reasonably neatly. Pants halfway down looks sloppy (not immodest, sloppy) and detracts from any message--as does wearing sneakers untied (not to mention both create safety problems). Other than that, they should just be focused on wearing things that are comfortable and in good condition. Ditto for book bags--I see nothing wrong with nylon bags if one sees fit to use them. Just make sure they are good quality, not excessively bulky (or too big--encourages Brother Hounder to push pious-sneering), and are not blatantly worn out.

Of course, with that this message damns society to communism, I do not recommend pushing it at all. Regardless of whether I can see underwear, I would rather see a message of salvation from someone whose private parts are in full view (not just the underwear) than a message that damns society to communism from someone wearing the finest starched suit and is impeccably dressed.
