Given the fact that religion has been such a divisive force throughout history amongst all nations and tribes of the earth , I wonder how things might have been different had their been no GOD / Creator / Religion in the mix.

Of course religion alone has not been the cause of all mankinds troubles & conflicts with each other , Nationalism , Polotics , Racism , to name a few are also guilty of these problems.

But it seems to me that religion , beleif in a Creator / God and its consequences of such a beleif are the cheif causes of mankinds troubles.

Remember this is your thoughts if a Creator , GOD , Religion didnt exist in human conscience .

    What are your thoughts ?

the idea of a creator came from the hard fact that to make things is DIFFICULT, and

there is this BIG and and even much bigger than the ancients thought CREATION out there and astonishingly complex in here.

so whithout work done, there would be no world today. period.

of course if the universe made itself, then religion would be a superfluous anomality.

LOL, I don't think that makes much sense, prologos! What if there was a god/creator, but nobody knew? Whichever way... the forgetful, resentful, and totally childish god of the OT certainly didn't create the universe!

Without religion we probably would have had computers hundreds of years before we did. Christianity has always held back science.

transhuman68, you are right, worrying about and exploiting the idea of a creator, and the stories it spawned, retarded progress in some quarters.

but did not stop deists/ believers to greatly contribute to progress.

Yes, but not because they were believers... but in spite of it. It took the Catholic Church until 1992 to admit that Galileo had, in fact, been correct; and the Earth did orbit around the Sun- in spite of what the Bible said! And scientists used to believe that the centre of the Earth was composed of water- because the Bible said so. Religion has been a disaster for humans.

I don't think it's belief in a God/creator per se that is the problem, it is the widespread belief that ancient scriptures written by scientifically ignorant, superstitious desert dwelling nomads (Hebrew Scriptures, Koran) are literally the inspired word of God that is the problem.

The most primitive and natural religious feeling was worship of the sun and astrological entities. The sun moved and gave light and warmth, the moon changed shape from full to a crescent, the stars and comets moved, etc. These movements were predictable and corresponded to changes in the temperature, length of days, seasons, harvest productivity, etc. All this movement and their apparent affect on earth suggested to the ancients higher power/s that were to be praised/appeased.

This is what is left after stripping away all scripture based ideas of God. Basically, animism.

If all the resources that went into religious activities had been efficiently channeled into SCIENTIFIC endevours, it would be a wonderfully advanced world,

IF a purely science - based moral system would have been developed and enforced,- along with that.

In the meantime, the universe just keeps humming along, whether we think it created itself, or was made.

    Dear Smid,

I was wondering the same thing myself, just the other day....

'Religion,' has been used as a means to control people.... to 'make one person more special than another.' Want to have a reason to get rid of your 'enemies'? etc....

I believe, that if all people were just curious, and like children, good hearted, wanting to learn, the world would have been a lot more gregarious, scientifically advanced.....

If there were no 'god', perhaps there would be other things.... like 'bosses,' 'kings,' 'heads of tribes,' 'generals of armies,' 'CEO's,' 'klans of families,' that would still demand loyalty, obedience. Perhaps men make themselves like gods, perhaps it would be the same?

Anthropology documents the rise of worship. First involving nature and natural phenomena then progressing to beings that would control nature. Hard to imagine our ancestors doing things different. Now we are here with our bag of knowledge, we now know so much more.

I wonder whether religion wasn't a necessary part of our cultural development.

It belongs to the infancy of our species and has long since become a hindrence.

The psychology of religion is all about appealing to our childish desires.

Our existence is not eternal. Life is ultimately unfair. Nobody is going to reward us when it's over, or punish our delinquent siblings. The universe does not care about us.

We tend to shield children from these harsh realities, but eventually we have to grow up.
