Maybe 'God' and 'Nothing' are actually concepts that are far beyond our primitive level of understanding. Humans have the very mistaken belief that they actually know what each of these concepts really means. There is far more about the Universe (and beyond!) that we DON'T know than we DO know. Yet we naively think that we can explain things that are beyond our ability to fully comprehend given that we are tiny specks living on a tiny speck within a tiny speck of the Universe, ad infinitum.

I wonder if the real question should be whether atheism is a religion rather than a belief system! Anyhow my view is that all views constitute a belief system, if they attach to a greater body of views or `world view` that has internal logic within itself. It doesn’t matter if logic breaks down outside the system of belief. For example, the belief that squares are in fact circles would not constitute a belief system unless this view implied other things connected with the belief. It has to be a system of belief!
To state that God does not exist implies quite a few other things besides the God part. In this regard it becomes a system of belief. The fact that God cannot be proven to exist or not exist, makes any statement about his existence a belief system for both believer and non-believer.
To put it very simply, all views and ideas, except for pure mathematics, that cannot be 100 percent proven are belief systems. It does not matter if they are views about things existing or not existing because even a negative belief is still a belief. The fact that even science doesn’t deal in proof is evidence that this is the case. So yes atheism is a belief system.

I reject belief in god because nobody has provided empirical proof of their deity. Until someone provides empirical proof my atheism is not a belief system, it is not a religion, it is not a faith. Believers and theists can make all the claims they like to try and somehow equate their faith in unsubstantiated claims to my skepticism but ultimately they are simply wrong. Every atheist that has contributed to this thread has effectively said the same thing.
There is a simple reason why this is so, if you could provide hard empirical evidence for the existance of your deity then I would gladly and publicly announce that I was wrong.

If I said that I do not believe in Thor, Hercules, Vishnu, Shiva, or Zeus is that a belief system or "religion"? I chose to put the Hebrew war god YHWH in the same catergory. I see no reason to put this horrible entity any more validity than these other mythical entities. The difference is that we are not surrounded by people claiming to believe in these other beings, but we are surrounded by people sacrificing their lives, shunning, and killing for the delusion of the most reprehensible entities, YHWH and Allah. Both the scum of fiction but they can do no wrong in the minds of the faithful.
In fact if my "loved ones" were to read this post and know I wrote it, they would disown me as worse than Hitler or Pol Pot! Why? Because they believe in and "love" an entity as real as the tooth fairy or Yoda. It wouldnt be so bad if the god they claim to serve wasnt such a vindictive, evil charachter and the book they claim to base their lives on wasnt full of genocidal war mongers like king David, Joshua, and Moses. They follow the pattern and it shows.

Thanks. I am really getting sick of the warped mindset of JWs and the apolagist attitude of Christians and Muslims where anything they are said to do is justified.
I asked my wife if she heard a voice in her head and it said it was Jehovah and it told her to drown her daughter, would she do it? She said she would institutionalize herself. I said well thats what Abraham heard and he was obedient to the command. Did it make an impact? I dont know but any arguments or reasoning with a zombie seems to roll away from their heart and mind like water off of a rubber raincoat.

Also, I dont have "faith" the global flood didnt happen, and believers cannot have faith that it did! I have reality, they have delusion.
I dont have faith that the sun will come up in the morning, I know it will. If you claim otherwise, you are not faithful, you are delusional. There is no honor in clinging to a delision.
Come on people, we are living in times where we should be past the creationist, theist claptrap. Humans of the past had an excuse. They didnt understand science, and "god" or "the devil" was the only explanation for all the wonder and evil around them. See a beautiful sunset? See a mountain range? A rainbow? I am filled with wonder and happiness about these things but see no need to give any myth god credit for them, any more than I feel the need to blame them for "creating" smallpox, Ebola, or cancer.
