The new phonograph

Way back in 20's or 30's, (someone correct me if I have the time frame wrong), the WT's strategy for witnessing was to give each publisher (or have them buy one) a phonograph to set on the householder's steps so they could play one of the Judge's speeches.

Flash forward and there was a testimony card that publishers handed to the householder, introducing them.

This gave way to the current model of the publisher being informed and able to discuss a subject with the householder.

That seems to be giving way to the new approach being used by the WT: the website.

The WT realizes that slick content is more impressive that a publisher talking, one who can't or won't keep up with the insane doctrinal changes.

Publishing books and magazines is taking the back seat; the WT and Awake have less than half the content they used to, and are published half as often.

The WT's trolley cart method involves not getting into discussions with people, but using an iPad to play them a video.

    The past is the future!

The iPad and the website seem to be the new phonograph.

I wonder what would happen if I "accidentally" bookmarked this site instead of theirs and showed householders (especially promising calls) this site. Or some other web site exposing washtowel doctrine as rubbish. Or, even the Exposing Christianity section of Joy of Satan. Let them read that, and I doubt they will go on to become jokehovians.

I thought the same thing, WT Wizard.

When the internet is involved, JW's may not search everything that is out there on JW's, but worldly people will.

    What is the WT thinking?

The net is not the place to send people to learn about the witnesses.

Very good observation. This mirrors the overall trend of going back toward elements from Rutherford's reign in molding the new JW.ORG.

Absolutely...the ipad is the new phonograph.

People were using a video (talked about at the convention) just this week in the door to door work with their ipad.

Supposedly, a couple of studies were started.

It has to be more effective than the dubs asking stupid questions and faking conversation, but it has a very cultish.

I had the same thought when I heard about witnessing with new technology. I played with my grandpas phonograph as a child and I believe I started by playing with one of Rutherfords records. Very boring to a 5 year old. I also remember findiing the testimony cards and thought that was easier than offering the mags at the door.

Check out the July 2014 KM last page, week starting August 4. Sample Presentations, Right hand column, middle of page:

Perhaps you can show him a sample by playing the video Why Study the Bible?

What if you don't have the appropriate device to show such video? Is is just assumed now that all good dubs will have one? My wife told me she was recently thinking about getting a tablet (I wonder why, she can't even check her email on the laptop without my help) but she gave up. How will the 'have-nots' or 'cannots' react? Maybe it is just a ploy to keep the younger crowd feeling relevant. I smell exclusion/jettison.

How will the retired folks, my inlaws among them, be able to afford an iPad?

I wonder who at the KH gets the irony of the speakers at the assembly inveighing against a greedy, materialistic mindset, all the while showing regular Joe Publishers using $700 tablets at the door to do what we used to do with a $3 Bible and .25 magazines??

Will a father struggling to make the mortgage now feel obligated to outfit the family with tablets every few years?

    Technology goes old FAST.

This is a mistake on the part of leadership.

The next thing you will hear is a talk about us NOT having to have the latest in technology, lol.

Of course, Dad will get hammered! And don't try to give them some crappy Android knock-off. It will need to be an iPad in whatever color is currently in vogue.

I gotta be honest, the craze for tablets at the meetings just annoys the hell out of me.

And every true blue believer among my relatives has the WT library app on their smartphones, even the ones who don't have pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of.

It makes me thing of having a Ferrari you can only drive on roads with huge potholes; using smartphone tech to access some of the worst of all doctrine and dogma.

    Ugh.
