6th Sense.

Every attempt to prove that humans have some kind of "sixth sense" shows it to be complete BS. But we have all sorts of "extra" senses that we either never use or don't notice when we do.

    That being said:

Ovulating women can sense snakes and gays:

    Hope that counts.

No, under certain conditions - such as those given in your interesting links (thanks!) - we simply use our existing senses in a heightened, amplified, more sensitive manner (i.e., better).

I'm not saying science explains all observed phenomena. It patently does not. But a sufficiently high proportion of scientists are honest and admit what science does not (yet) know. There are many paradoxical observations for which no sensible explanatory theories have been concocted. And there may be unknowable things too.

I am open-minded, but not so open-minded that the breeze blows in one ear and right out the other. I am a natural skeptic. If intuition / "sixth-sense" really existed (as distinct from "mere" involuntary or subconscious thinking) no one would be more intrigued or hooked than I.

If I acted on the basis of intuition rather than mathematics, I'd have bankrupted myself long ago.

Focus, you are way too clever for me.

I know though, what I feel.

The idea of a 6th sense is probably akin to that of a person possessed of extra keen eyesight or a natural born Pavarotti. Or maybe a super taster (yes they exist) or a super sniffer.

It is possible that people not born with one of those abilities would doubt them. So is it possible that a person born with a high level of intuition would find it difficult to "prove" how that works?

Proving such a thing especially to ones who have developed other parts of their own brain to be strong and efficient would probably be daunting.

I hope you were joking. If that's true, you're really in trouble (lol).

I know though, what I feel. I can sense trouble.

Here, I put it to you that you're merely (a lot?) cleverer than you think you are. At a subconscious level, using data provided by your 5 senses, and your memory and experience, you are able to logically work out, with high accuracy, when there's danger, even when the 5 senses don't directly detect it.

This skill possessed by your ancient forebears / ancestors is what ensured you actually exist today. Without it, they'd have joined the other 99.9% of species that have lived on earth but are now extinct.

That's how I see it. I could be wrong.

You bet ..subconscious thought, gambler's or hunter's instinct, intuition ...a sense by any other rose . It exists ..better believe it. I can't define or explain it . It has helped me time and again when betting the horses or dogs. Both when I'm betting wrong as well as when I've picked right.

Hairtrigger, nothing there for me to disbelieve or to challenge my own beliefs. Subconscious thoughts exist.

Heck, I've often gone to bed with a technical problem buzzing around my head - and woken up with a solution - sometimes a correct one - right there in place.

This has nothing to do with alleged sixth sense, for whose existence I see no evidence.

Intuition can be trained and fooled. I don't believe in an actual 6th sense, but I believe that may the best layman way to explain what is taking place. Do you get my meaning?

I enjoyed the book 'Blink" by Malcolm Gladwell.

Also, when you go to sleep working on a problem, not being able to beat a level in a video game, or trying a chord on an instrument that you are learning that you just can't get right......how many times to you wake up, start it up, and you do it on the first or second try?

There is an amazing explanation for that. Radiolab did a piece on the brain I would highly recommend in which it is more or less explained. (at least the theory is explained).
