I remember as kids we would say " liar, liar your pants are on fire" and they wern't were they. So that in itself was a lie.

But is lying always so bad? I mean for example at an art class as a kid when i had to commented someones work, rather than be nasty, at a picture which was terrible and TRACED as well ! ! ...i said " nice use of colour" - you know things like that. Trying to find the positive.

Anyway i found out the kid is now Senior Architect for Westminister Council!

Ok the above was a " lie" but my point is if little " lies" make our lifes a little better is it such a bad thing. I mean do you mind buying a big mac based on those photos that look nothing like the big mac you purchase? That in fact botherd and will be the last time i purchase one. Ok that's a lie because i always say that and it never is.

The truth is the Big Mac (TM) in the picture is rubber and airbrushed. Much like modern Bethel's Styrofoam "at the proper time". But rubber Big Macs are delicious!

Yes Oceon i know how Mcdonalds make a burger yummmy.....

Another example of legal lyong is, say i want to to sell a product i can ring a customer and lie " my brother died and i am selling stock from his hardware business cheap...blah, blah" Such lying is not against the law.

I think in society we all have to live by our own social and moral standards.

Truth and lies is interesting, there is no absoloute right or wrong with the truth and with lies...also it is about perspective, we called a huge lie 'the truth' for quite some time and believed it......but now we don't. As for me saying there is no right and wrong, we can all think of examples where to lie is right and to tell the truth is wrong.

Truth and lies are grounded in what is beneficial for us as a species. Is it beneficial to be told that it is ok to drink poison? Is it beneficial for the prolongation of your genes to say your wifes gluteus maximum looks enlarged in her jeans?

I appreciate the level above that, the level of evidence and absoloute truths, such as the earth DOES go around the sun, but with so few known and evidential truths, we have to decide on a compass for truth and lies, by the numbers it is better to tell the truth because it is more likely to be helpful to know the truth in a situation, but sometimes it is less emotionally appropriate to tell the truth.

    Anyone agree/disagree?

Well we have all seen the film " Liar Liar"...and yet as i watched that film a voice within me sobbed, i didn' t find it funny. I mean seriously if telling the truth is a comedy, then lets turn life in to one big joke. But on the other sideof the coin it nice being told you have a great haircut, even when you know you look terrible.

Snake i am still thinking on your comment.( No lie)

Calling it "the truth" is no accidental language/terminology.

Here is some interesting science (Stroop Effect):

    http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/words.html

    "Colors, Colors

The famous "Stroop Effect" is named after J. Ridley Stroop who discovered this strange phenomenon in the 1930s. Here is your job: name the colors of the following words. Do NOT read the words...rather, say the color of the words. For example, if the word "BLUE" is printed in a red color, you should say "RED". Say the colors as fast as you can. It is not as easy as you might think!"

    ----

When "the truth" is mostly a LIE, but you repeatedly call the entire conglomeration a "truth"... then that is part of a mind control device, imo.

Someone must know that this is a cult because the whole way it is run and the members manipulated means that there is some clever thinking behind the practical organisation of it. Some dotty old men who really believe would not know about mind control techniques (which someone clearly does ) . The crafty way the members are tricked into policing each other and the scare tactics used show real thought behind the scenes somewhere .

The leadership use mind control/brainwashing/coersive persuasion techniques on purpose. It's not by accident that they are structured the way they are, with persuasive talks designed to move the listener, not only to act, but mostly to AGREE. Once they find themselves agreeing even to the simplest notion, then they are invested. The trap has snapped shut. They will do what the speaker has 'suggested' in the third part of the structured "talk".

Yes set: get the listener to agree with an idea.
Truism: "facts" that are otherwise debatable, tossed out there as plausible truthiness. "Evidentally". "It is apparent". "Picture in your mind: tears of joy rolling down their faces", when nothing like that is said in the scriptures. And so on.
Suggestion: the solution that may or may not have anything to do with really resolving anything spoken about previously. Sign over property. Give a kiss. Go door-to-door. Say a prayer. Roll in the aisles. Throw money at the speaker. Wear his brand of tee shirts. Whatever.

There was an interesting TV show on in the USA called "Lie to Me". One of the characters practiced 'Radical Honesty'. Radical honesty was creepy and annoying for all the other characters and would be in real life. It would've required you to tell your student "Your picture stinks, I cannot believe you traced it and it turned out that bad. Your use of color was good though."
