    As Witness My Fury suggested, right click on your 'Recycle Bin' icon on your desktop and then choose 'Empty Recycle Bin'.

    If you don't do that, files that you think you have deleted, have actually been moved to the Recycle Bin and continue to consume space on your hard drive.

    One piece of software that I find effective is Tony Arts - EASY CLEANER. In addition to identifying unnecessary files on your drive, it also makes it easy to clear the browser cache and also identify programs that load on startup which usually slow the operation of the computer. Often, there is little benefit for many of these programs to run in the background so you may easily delete their entry in the startup file.

    Easy Cleaner needs to be run by the computer's Administrator. After installation, right click the Easy Cleaner icon and choose 'Run As Administrator'.

    Can also look at virtual memory.

    When a computer's physical memory (RAM) is full, it will start using the hard drive as "virtual memory" The operating system will manage how much of your hard drive to use for this. If it is set at 10Gb, then all free space under 10Gb will be immediately allocated for virtual usage. how to manage this differs between OS, so look up your version and google the the correct settings to see if this is it.

    Current programs are requiring more and more RAM, so if you are running less than 4Gb of RAM, it may be the culprit.

    Thank you, dear computer-knowledgeable friends, for your kind and patient help. A poet and dreamer -- alas! -- I cannot fully understand all that you have suggested I should do.

    I am taking the best of my 3 hand-me-downs (iMac PowerBook G4) to my computer-tech friend and have him clean it up for me. I'm using it now -- can you tell?!?!?!?

    Your willingness to help is much appreciated. My heart feels your love and concern; my right-brain persona, however, is useless as regards tech help. I tried the easier suggestions, and the red line has not receded in the least.
