    Terry...

are you trying to make the point that as christians or, indeed as a civilized nation, we can't grow? We've reached a plateau with the anti-war demonstrations and that was an anomaly...now we are fated to follow the trajectory of our past?

maybe I'm asking the wrong person?

I appreciated Terry's essay above. The only clarification I need, to embrace it fully, is to clarify if he is saying that because these are immoral morons that society should just let them run their course rather than take ugly, moronic methods, with modern weaponry and "intelligence" to blow their moron brains out before more innocents are killed or they truly cripple our system of living.

As to the point of the thread it reminds of the Helter Skelter plan of Charles Manson. A moron for sure, but he oversaw the butchering of a lot of innocent people before he was stopped.

The US President knows his history. In 217 B.C.E. Hannibal and his Cathaginians lured the Army of Rome into a trap and within hours the Roman army was destroyed.

The Muslim militants want the US Army to make that mistake.

Dirty bombs, poisons, biological weapons would all be used.

Osama Bin Laden’s Dream of US Economic Collapse

    September 18th, 2008

     Blogs Us Building Collapse Small
Daniel Eran DilgerSupporters of the Bush administration like to say that there have been no terrorist attacks on US soil since the tragedy of September 11, 2001, suggesting that President Bush has kept the country safe from terrorism. What they forget is that Osama Bin Laden clearly outlined his strategy for battling America, not by flying more planes into new buildings, but by driving the US into bankruptcy.
    .
The current economic collapse among US banks has cost taxpayers over $800 billion so far in federal bailouts. Add in the trillions spent off the budget in financing the occupation of Iraq and a maintenance mode war in Afghanistan, and it’s obvious that the yet uncaptured Bin Laden can declare “mission accomplished.”

In November 2004, CNN reported that Bin Laden released a video monologue to Al-Jazeera where the terror-savvy, extreme fundamentalist announced plans to continue a “policy in bleeding America to the point of bankruptcy” using similar tactics to those used when fighting the Soviet Union in Afghanistan in the 80s, “guerrilla warfare and the war of attrition to fight tyrannical superpowers.”

    CNN.com – Bin Laden: Goal is to bankrupt U.S. – Nov 1, 2004

“Easy to Provoke and Bait this Administration.”
Bin Laden bragged at the time that al Qaeda has found it “easy for us to provoke and bait this administration. All that we have to do is to send two mujahedeen to the furthest point east to raise a piece of cloth on which is written al Qaeda, in order to make generals race there to cause America to suffer human, economic and political losses without their achieving anything of note other than some benefits for their private corporations.”

“And it all shows that the real loser is you,” Bin Laden said. “It is the American people and their economy.”

On a much simpler level than many of the posts I have thought that maybe IS do want to cause a backlash against Muslims in the U.K. , America etc . They would not be bothered about innocent Muslims being attacked or killed and race wars (which really they would be ) would course a lot of harm to the countries affected . It is almost as if they are being deliberately provocative to turn people against Islam and by extension Muslims .

As for the OP, I think that was the effect of the 9/11 bombings - wheterh that was what Osama Bin-Laden intended or not, the effect was Islam being seen in the West as the enemy which made Al-Qaeda's claim that the West hated Islam a self-fulfilling prophecy. Putting beheadings on the internet is just the latest terrorist device designed to shock and create fear and we all know that fear easily turns to phobia. The immediate objective is to try to intimidate the West into stopping air strikes but if it also results in increased Western hatred towards Muslims which drives moderate Muslims to become extremists, that is cream on the cake.
