IN BC I get paid to saty home lol on Monday... two hours from now about...

As talesin says Canadian adopted a festival of Americans ... not surprising... borders were quite fluid before 1812...

It's still an ancein harvest festival like almost every culture in temperate zones celebrated...

Halloween's origins are darker though and are for another post

Just like christmas, ignore the origins and the folderol, and just have a good time. If you like to cook, it's a great holiday. You can really lay out a spread and have a wonderful time in the kitchen -- always supposing you have help with the dishes!

Back when I was studying with a Witness MS, I got invited to the home of an Elder and his wife for a 'Turkey Dinner'. Of course it was a day or two before or after the 'real' Thanksgiving Day. The meal was great, but I couldn't help wondering what would have been so wrong with actually having the meal on Thanksgiving Day. JWs can be so petty when it comes to any type of enjoyable holiday celebration. Yet when I asked the MS I studied with about celebrating Thanksgiving, he told me there was nothing wrong with it because it was just showing thanks to Jehovah. But had I been baptized it would have been a different story entirely.

The tradition is Turkey, Cranberries (Why ? :"P)

Turkey is a large bird and feeds a lot of people. Cranberry helps you digest it.

TG is one of my favorite days of the year. Football, friends, good food, good drink. It's hard to beat. Most dubs in our area get together every year. I think the line that most witnesses won't cross is that they won't serve turkey on Thursday. Its usually pizza or something else. If you serve turkey it has to be on a different day. It may be hypocritical but I'm glad dubs aren't hardline on it.

I'm in Canada. We used to have turkey but it was usually on the Sat or Sun, never the Mon so I guess we were 'safe'. Same would go for Christmas Gift Exchange Day... we'd have turkey but not on Christmas day, usually after. As I said, turkey feeds a large group very well.

Actually there was no US when the first Thanksgiving was celebrated. We were all happy colonies (Canada, US) under the English rule.

I don't know if there is any truth to the story or if it is a made up legend to cover over the truth that the first Europeans to come here exterminated most of the east coast native North Americans.
