Red Wine, MSG, Nitrates (hot dogs, lunch meats, etc), certain cheeses, can aggravate Migranes and of course the big one in my case STRESS! Imitrex works very well for my kids I can't take it because of my family history of Heart Disease and coronary vasospasm which I have. I take Calcium Channel Blockers (Norvasc) and although for the first week I took them I had a headache, it subsided and my migraines greatly decreased. I take the Norvasc for the vasospasm and my doctor says that it is very possible that is why I get Migranes, I could be having cerebral vasospasm and this causes the migranes. Who knows they run in my family. If you've never had one you have no idea what it's like. Oh yeah, when I do get them I take Fiorinal w/Codeine.

    Hi Everyone,

I too have found that there are food related problems to headaches and migraines. However, there is also something else you can do that doesn't require popping more pills. CHIROPRACTIC care! If you are not familiar with it, then I recommend you research it and find a chiropractic doctor you feel comfortable with.

Basically, what they do is put your spine back into alignment so that your nerve endings can transmit the proper energy to the proper places. If you have a subluxation in your neck, then you can have anything from severe mood swings (me:)), to headaches, sinus problems etc. I have found that if I make sure my body is in the proper condition to do what it's supposed to do by itself, then I have less problems to deal with.

Anyway, I hope this helps. If anyone has more questions, feel free to email me. There's a lot of helpful info out there on how to feel good without medication!

    Love,

    Becky (edited for spelling)

Hi Billygoat. I am sorry you suffer migranes, me and my father have both had migranes, ugh, they are horrible! I have heard there are prescriptions from the doctor that can help, but what has worked for us is a little yellow pill called chlortrimeton. It is an allergy medicine(?) but it works better for us than asprin or Tylenol. It has really helped both of us. I havent had a migrane in a long time, but when I get them, they are really bad.
    Hope you get some relief!

Hi Billygoat;sorry to hear you're getting them...I've suffered since childhood, but only when i'm upset, stressed or even really excited.I used to ride alot and got them before I went out;'cos I looked forward to it so much-even if it was everyday! But mainly I get the pain beginning in my right(always!)eye, slowly creeping up the scale in intensity until I feel as though i'll pass out with pain, and nausea.
I've tried tablets, but nothing works;it was weird to hear you say about the cool sheets!I have to get a cold compress and try to sleep; when I wake up they're usually gone,I find I can't wear any jewellery either,it feels too 'heavy' on my skin.I usually have to get undressed too. It's almost as though my skin is too sensitive.Deep breathing can help, even if it just calms your screeming nerves for a while. My daughter's teaching me to meditate as she's learning yoga at school, i'm hoping that'll do the same job on another level.Hope it's of some help-
    Stay unstressed!XX

    Andi,
I just saw this thread, so I'm a little late with my reply. I started getting migraines out of the blue 2 years ago. I thought I had a brain tumor or something similiar. The left side of my face gets numb and I see stars or twinkly things. The pain is incredible. Nothing over the counter has helped at all. But my doctor gave me Maxalt, it's a prescription that helps the pain, it doesn't prevent the migraine from develping. It works really well. The other thing I did, was go off the pill. I have only had 1 migraine in the past 6 months, and I was getting them 1-2 times a month. I take the Maxalt as soon as I feel the migraine coming and a couple of times, it has knocked it out. Maybe your doctor will give you a sample to try. Hope that helps.....

99 people out of 100, if I understand teh numbers correctly, who have 2 or more migraines per years, benefit from a regimen where they take a child's dose of Benedryl or some other antihistamine three times per week.

migraines have been linked to allergies, and oftentimes to dairy prodeucts, which the human body was NOT DESIGNED to have after age two or so.

In cultures that are not meat/dairy based, migraines are almost non-existant. Migraines appear to be indicative of an immune system that is overstressed.

While antihistamine use appears to be a good treatment, they are not considered very good for long-term use becasue they don't solve the problem. For myself tho, I am vegetarian and avoiding dairy products is not always an option, especially when stressed as in traveling. So I am usually on antihistamines thrice weekly.

If for any reason a migraine hits tho, I rely on Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold Medicine. It is the necter of the migraine god. Even if I've stupidly waited so late as to be nauseous and vomiting, I usually can get the alka-selter down, it takes about twenty minutes to work.

Once you are on some kind of regimen, the need for migraine drugs that are prescription is negated, this is best. Over the counter rememdies are much safer.

    best wishes.

I'm sorry to hear that you all suffer from migraines. Me too, I usually can tell when one's coming on. My scalp starts feeling tingly, then then pain hits. It's very intense accompanied by sensitivity to lights, and strongs smells. Also I get nausea. I've probably tried every remedy ever suggested, but nothing helped. I finally got on the prescription ZOMIG. You can take them every two hours, but I've never had to take more than one. This stuff kicks A**

Hi Andi - am so sorry about your pain. I have had migraines directly attributed to a sensitivity to MSG (monosodium glutamate) and its cousins like hydrolyzed vegetable proteins. Very difficult for me because of my Japanese background - traditional Japanese foods contain a lot of MSG, at least the packaged stuff (pickles, crackers and soup stocks mostly). Recently MSG also started causing my heart to beat irregularly. But not all migraines are triggered by MSG. As others have said there are many triggers for migraines. As much as I dislike doctors, this is one case where it would be a very good idea to go get checked out. There are some really good treatments so that you should never have to suffer such extremem pain. Wishing you good health!

    Mrs. Rocky,

Very interesting. I am half Japanese myself. I do not really watch my diet when it comes to MSG - I love all kinds of unhealthy fast foods too. I might start watching that. The reason I say that is because I have an irregular heartbeat. Always have, doctors were never too concerned about it since I've always been healthy as a horse. Hmmm.

I have not had a migraine since that day, but I do have a lot of regular headaches since then. That day was just absolutely the worst!
I just know that it's from the stressors in my life right now. Works sucks, taking a two week trip in July, a week business trip in July, wedding plans, etc. Just a lot on my plate. I'm really looking forward to the END of July since then the two trips will be out of the way and I can just enjoy wedding plans.
