Andi - my daughter, who is quarter Japanese, also has had some episodes with irregular heartbeat. She was only 16 when it started. We finally figured out that it was stress and anxiety coupled with caffeine and sugar. She's learned some relaxation stuff since then, quit the caffeine, and is careful with the sugar. And she avoids MSG. I'm healthy otherwise too, as long as I stay away from MSG. It's taken years for my mom to believe that her 'ajinomoto' would be causing me difficulty. But it's in everything. I really miss crunchy cheetos, and rice crackers. You might try avoiding foods with MSG for a week and see what happens. I haven't given up Whoppers at Burger King, plain fries - they don't seem to put MSG on the burgers or plain fries. Let me know if you want more info on safe fast foods, I think I've figured out which places are MSG free and which are not. Glad you're headache hasn't come back.

Oh I know the horror that is the migraine as well. Like xanex, I believe I inherited the gene - many in the family suffer. None of the fab new drugs do a thing - imitrex etc.

Between hormone changes, diet (msg, aspartame), weather (low pressure systems), and good ol reliable stress - I've learned to bite the bullet. OTC remedies do not work for me. It's prescription or a syringe in the butt. Considering the long waits at the ER, I'm on prescription painkillers.

It's an individual thing. No one thing is gonna work for everyone. I think the only thing we'd all agree helps is a dark, cool and very quiet room.

I had a room mate who got migraines fairly often. If you're open to trying supplements, there is one particular product that worked for him. It's basically a feverfew extract but the highest standardized extract I've seen, along with some B vitamins and a couple other things. The product is Migra-Actin by Nature's Plus. He's tried other feverfew extracts (at either .6 or .8%, whereas it's 1.2% in this one) but this is the only thing that worked, and it seems like it works quite well. He's taken it at the onset of symptoms at it appears to stop it. I don't ever remember him taking it and having it fail to work.

And just for the record, I don't own stock in the company and it's not a multi-level marketing thing. It's available retail.

I've heard of feverfew being helpful but have not tried it. It sounds like it would be worth a try, especially since the product is available OTC and not through a multilevel thing. The multilevel marketing thing would give you a migraine if you didn't already have one! (No offense intended to anyone who makes their living through multilevel marketing - I'm just not cut out for that kind of work.)

BeeG’, If you haven’t already done so, you may want to consider sinusitis as a possible culprit.

There may be a chance that a slightly deviated nasal passage, for example, my obstruct oxygen (that acts as a natural antibiotic) from accessing your sinus cavities to the point that bacteria accumulates unchecked in a warm, damp, poorly drained enclosure.

The result of which is an infection that causes intense sinus pressure behind either the left or right eye, or both, and acts like a migraine, accompanied by fever.

Surprisingly, the most intense sinus pain sometimes occurs when antibodies destroy some of the accumulated bacteria in a sinus cavity leaving a painful vacuum or air pressure imbalance.

If this happens to be the case after consulting your doctor, he/she may suggest riding it out with rest and recouping your immune efficiency through proper diet, temporary relief with extra-strength (500mg) aspirin. Or in severe cases prescribe antibiotics to fight the infection or ultimately, corrective day surgery to solve the cause rather than treat the on going headache symptoms.

See a doctor, I’m simply passing on another perspective.

Remember just as when we were Jehovah’s Witnesses and asked the Borg’s local corporate managers (elders) for advice, ‘we got what we paid for’.

    Take care, BeeG’.

I get horrible migraine and tension headaches. The migraines are so intense that I have to be in a dark room, totally drugged up on narcotics. They interfere w/ my vision, can't eat, can't sleep, I can't get up or I'm spinning inside my own head. Been getting these since 8th grade.

    grrrraaaaawww

I think I have started getting them. Had a vicious headache all weekend. Feels like the side of my head will implode. I noticed the few days before the headache started that whenever I closed my eyes I would get a flash of light sort of like someone shining a light in your open eyes. It only lasts a fraction of a second but occurred several times over several minutes. I did get nauseaus once the headache started but I don't vomit - rarely do for any reason.

grrrraaawww one more thing to ask my incompetent dr about - think I will look for a new dr

It's funny this thread was brought up. I just had a migraine last night. It still hurts a bit but not half as bad as last night.

    Hi everybody,

The suggestions for avoiding triggers like MSG and chocolate are great. There are definite links in food for some people. However, I do want to ask something--So many here have listed drug after drug, although nobody has said that they've gotten rid of the migraines. If you're tired of popping pills that aren't good for you in the long run anyway, please try Chiropractic care. Bodhibear420, a new poster, is a Chiropractor, and he would answer any questions if you'd like to learn more.

I've been getting adjusted about once a week now, and although I'm not a migraine sufferer, I do have a lot of mood swings and it's helped me tremendously. However, I do know many who've suffered from migraines who no longer have them--no pills involved.

I just thought I'd share, because it seems that some of you are suffering needlessly. Hope this helps,

    Becky
