What is good is that he is passing the buck to the elders. Maybe if the elders realize that it is THEIR decision to follow the right course of action and if they screw it up, then its on THEIR head, then maybe they might just do the right thing!!!
Instead of looking to follow a directive, they will look to protect their ass.......and just maybe a little child will be protected too!
Instead of calling mama, they will look at the obvious and say pedophiles don't get to stay incognito and go door to door.
I did notice the comment, and immediately said out lod(I WAS ALONE), "there they go again, passing the buck to the elders. Of corse, this is not the first time I heard hat comment. I beieve another WTS spokesman said the same in a news article a couple of weeks back.
Boozy
I've been having email conversations with a good friend in Florida, who saw the show. She has nevr been a JW but is a devout Christian. (she takes care of my spiritual side!)
Anyway, she picked up on this point too:
As expected, Headquarters in New York would not personally respond but
supplied a video recording of some fellow explaining, blah, blah blah, that
they fully encourage parents to report abuse and if some of the 177,000
elders (?not sure of exact number) had misunderstood those intentions,
well....(Kinda reminds me of the expectation for Armageddon in 1975. They
always make things look like the miscalculations of over zealous members.) I
don't think everyone watching the program would be able to quite catch this
evil manipulative ploy unless they have been exposed to it before - very
insidious.
....if I were you, I'd go get myself a personal liability policy.

Lisa---That's probably the best advice that an elder could follow. Why did you have to go and tell 'em?
On the other hand, since very few elders have any money (and money is the only reason for bringing a civil lawsuit), it might be hard to get a lawyer interested in following through. If an insurance company was there to take up the slack and pay an award, more elders might wind up in court trying to explain their brainless actions. So elders might be better off without the insurance.
Oh well....just thinking out loud.
David
David, true enough.
I was selfishly thinking of people like my father who has more than his share of wealth, and I would hate for him to lose it over some stupid judicial committee shit where the WBTS told him what to do and then later claimed he "hadn't followed their instructions."
Lisa
Lisa---Simon must have moved this thread, because it took me a while to find it. Or maybe I'm going crazy.....
Anyway, I'm still thinking out loud: If your Dad is an elder and has got some money, he might be in a more vulnerable position than most. But I've got a feeling that the companies that offer this type of insurance are going take one look at the Watchtower and their "untrained volunteer" arrangement and view elders the same way they look at drivers with a DWI conviction: too risky. Wouldn't touch them for anything. However, from following your posts for the last 8 or 9 months, you seem to be pretty level-headed and compassionate, and you had to have gotten it from someone. Probably your dad. So I'd bet that he's a pretty good shepard. There are a few good elders in the organization, you know. Not many, but a few. So he'll be OK.
David
S'ok. I had to dig for it, too.
My dad stepped down aside some years ago. He's never told me why, but DAMN do I wish I knew.
And you are right. He was one of the good guys.

I am having a vision of elders getting "sick", more than usual, and resigning because of "health reasons".
Also i see many packing and moving to another state being "transfered" by their employer. Or looking for a better weather for health reasons.
At their new cong. they dont bother to qualify or reach out again, may not even attend mettings.
Hint, Hint.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the letter you refer to from "the Watchtower's General Counsel"???
Not that it changes any of the above points, but this time it is not Brown who has his foot in his mouth, it is the lawyers giving a very predictable lawyer-ese response.
