Here is my opinion which isn't based on any fact and is pure speculation:
The "overlapping" generation is still doctrine, however they're not putting it in print because it's so ludicrous they don't want to draw so much attention to it.
The explanation quoted above in the OP is like the "Watchtower Simplified" edition.

That makes a lot of sense. They may feel that it is "too soon" to put out a whole new Watchtower article changing it.
They don't know what the hell they are talking about. They are trying to justify 130 years of speculating.

Cappytan has it the way I see it. The Watchtower of 2010 with the "overlap" is still the official doctrine that explains why everything from "1914" to "this generation" to "soon" to even how Adam was 6000 years old in 1975 is CORRECT, but it is so ridiculous that they want to leave it in place and not mention it anymore. Plus, they print stuff for years, even decades, that is so vague and then they later point to their own printings and say "See, we've been leaning this way for a long time."
For a little while after the 1995 change in "generation," I fell for that for awhile. I would see how they would point to their own words from recent past study articles as if that was the word of God and we are just catching up on it.
The "Examining the Scriptures 2015" ("Daily Text") for October 28 may come back to haunt them lol:
This generation will by no means pass away until all these things happen.—Matt. 24:34.

So which is the generation that will by no means pass away?
It's the generation that knew the generation that saw these things, right?

Sounds like the GB heads are just trying to stretch " This Generation " doctrine a little further .
Well at least until the in place GB members die off , then everything will be handed over to the proceeding GB members and boy arent in for a nice challenge ?
