My Theory about wild X-JWs

I was pondering this theory this morning - what do you all think?

A few months ago I went to visit someone from my last congregation who is now also an X-JW. What is interesting is that, though completely straight-laced within the congregation, he became absolutely out of control once he left and is now trying to figure out how to get his life together. I've noticed this to be the case with quite a few X-JWs. So, being so analytical, I thought of a theory about this.

The unfortunate thing about the organization is that they make all the rules for you. Thus, when some people leave, they haven't a clue about their own personal "rules system" since everything was always decided for them - with the threat of the big DF to keep them in line.

I completely agree. When I got out on my own, I wanted to do everything that I wasn't allowed to do at home. I went to every bar in town, flirted w/ every attractive man relentlously, started smoking, experimented w/ drugs, and got the tatoo I always wanted. then I hid from the elders for 4 years until I got pregnant and couldn't hide anymore.

All the XJW's I know and am friends w/ all did the same thing. We couldn't wait to do everything the kids in high school were doing years ago. It was like we were teens again. I finally got to go to "dances" and hang out w/ my friends whenever and wherever w/o anybody questioning my every move. I had the time of my life. I finally became part of the "world" that was kept hidden from me for so long.

I think witness kids should be shown for themselves what's out there. You can tell them how bad it is till your blue in the face. But, that's not going to hinder them from trying it themselves when they get the chance. Then let them choose what they want to do. Otherwise, when they are finally exposed to the world, they'll go wild like we did.

Granted, not all JW kids do this. But, I'd assume it's more than half.

I agree zenpunk.......I know after I left I went wild...doing everything and anything that wasn't allowed before. This continued for awhile until I got it out of my system and settled down. I think given the chance to do normal things and grow up at a normal pace, many jws wouldn't have to experience this.

For me, I was like a little kid set lose in a candy store. Thank goodness those days are over....it was exhausting! I am happy to have gotten thru that stage in my life and moved on. Now I can still be "wild" but chose when I want to.

    Zenpunk,

There are many xJWs who do not go "wild". Personal circumstances, emotional maturity or a continued belief in the Bible all play a role, IMO.

We wern't meant to follow rules that we didn't choose for ourselves.

I totally agree, and I think Bboy summed it up nicely. We do not want to follow any rules that we don't set for ourselves--especially if they are from some antiquated book(yes, the bible) from a culture a long time ago. While there are things that we can glean from it on how to treat other people, most of it has no application to us today.

I too had a wild phase, but part of me is wild! And that's ok--I don't hurt or disrespect others in the process. It's a sad shame we didn't get to live our lives at the appropriate time, ie. teenager, college etc. But it's never too late to live your life, no matter how old you are when you leave. Congratulations to all for choosing to live!

I was wild BEFORE I was an XJW. That was partially the reason I DAd myself - I had tasted freedom, and I wanted the ultimate freedom, and I got it. Life is good right about now.

I agree ZP, but I guess I always a little chickens*&^ to go out and live my desires. and whenever I did, it was b/c I did it without thinking about it beforehand...i.e., spur of the moment.
Gee, i wished i had lived a little more before i got too old to be wild.
