JWs In Same Mess as First Century Christians

The Christian Greek Scriptures are full of "the end will come soon" rhetoric. Those people believed their religious leaders and sacrificed their lives and the lives of their children for what they thought was from God. They hoped to be reunited with each other after death or to be among those Paul spoke of who would in effect escape death altogether by being raised to the heavens at the coming of the Lord.

They waited and waited. They sacrificed much and died horrific deaths. Paul spoke over and over of the joys that would shortly be theirs. They continued to wait, suffer and die.

Then "John" gets a revelation! Now, that "revelation" is not only impossible to understand but it also leaves the timing of the "end" more uncertain, a "mystery"!

    _______________________________________________________________

Now comes the twentieth century. JWs are following THEIR religious leaders. Their leaders say the "end" is so near you can smell it! What should they do because now the "end" is near? Sacrifice, Sacrifice, Sacrifice! Sacrifice yourself and your children in behalf of the "Lord"! And they do. They die in Concentration Camps, they are beheaded, they are humiliated, they do not marry, they do not have children, they refuse transfusions, they go to prison for refusing alternative service in the military, etc. They sacrifice big time, just as the First Century Christians did.

"This must be the right course before God, after all it's what the early Christians did," are the words they comfort themselves with.

Now, also like the first century, the Watchtower is probably about to disclose its own "revelation": "The timing of the 'end' is unknowable and how could you think otherwise? That's why God has appointed us as your leaders to show you the error of your ways!"

One day a monument should be erected for all those who thought they were dying for God when in reality they died for believing men! Good lives sacrificed for nothing.

I'm afraid the planet Earth would make a pretty good monument to that, don't you?

    IW,

Good post. And a good lesson to those who are convinced JWdom will necessarily die.

After all, there are still millions who believe the fairy tales of Christianity, almost 2000 years later.

    Hi Jan,

After all, there are still millions who believe the fairy tales of Christianity, almost 2000 years later.

    True, Jan!

Throughout time people have died for so many lost causes, including of course religion and country. What is it with us? we follow just about anybody who will offer us what we want regardless of the cost to ourselves or others? Is it greed? Not all the time. Is it desperation? Sometimes.

I am interested to hear what you feel is a better way for mankind, if you have given that idea any thought. I believe we need to look outside of where we have been, both socially and politically.

Hi IW: The book, History of Christianity, by Paul Johnson, details a much different Christian religion than the fantasies presented by neo-Christian groups like the Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormon (LDS) and other like them. The early Christians were not a bucnh of forward moving, lock-step soldiers for Christ in a unified organization ... they were rather splintered, and held differeing views.

Some did resist burning incense to Caesar, and died for it. Some, many, were caught and tossed to the lions, not because of some issue with intergrity, but because they were Christians and Romans enjoyed watching people they didn't like get eaten in the arena. Many Christians thought of the 'end time' more in the context of their limited life span. Other Christians did look forward to an early end-time fulfillment.

The Roman Catholic Church was the largest and most major outgrowth of Christianity ... and its theology does speak of an 'end-time', but is far more focused on living a Christian life, here and now. So whatever the little Jehovah's Witness Church invented along the way since its founding is not reflective of the long history of Christianity as presented by mainline church tradition.

All that said, I agree with you that there are still a number of parallels between what the JWs have tried to do, and what a number of a few Christians have done in the first century. I also agree with JanH that much of Christian theology is based and built on fairy tales - especially by those groups that hold literal views of what is written in the Bible - fundamentalists are especially the worst offenders.

    Hi Amazing,

I have read Paul Johnson's "History of the Jews" (not sure if that is the correct title), beautiful book. It changed my feelings about Christianity and mankind in general. The Jewish history is IMO the epitome of the struggles and failures of all mankind expressed by one people.

Hoping all is good with you,

Thank you for expressing yourself so well. I am reading a book called "Bloodline of The Holy Grail". (The hidden lineage of Jesus revealed) by Laurence Gardner. Published in 1996.

I've only gotten through the first 20 pages, but it goes into detail about our history here on the earth in a way that I've never seen expressed in writing before. It is discussed in such a reasonable manner, recognizing the Bible as just a history book, and not a good one at that. I never really realized it, but all the countries kept records of their history. It would appear that it is much more accurate than the biblia of books mass religions have used to keep societies under control.

I highly recommend this piece of literature, found under the Religious History section.

    Love and Light,

IslandWomen, May you have peace! I was moved with love to respond in regards this posting. There are many misunderstands that Man has enforced upon society since the days of Jah-Eshua (Christ). Even during His time the Pharisees did this to the people. Keep in mind it is MEN that put together a book of what THEY 'believed' was Inspired of God; for this Jah of Armies had instructed us to 'test out the inspired expression to see if it originates with God' or not. (1John 4:1-4) Yes the disciples of the first century were Christians...but they were not 'made perfect' in the sense as our Master Jah-Eshua was. So they did make mistakes from time to time. That is why we are instructed to put Faith In Jah and Jah-Eshua for they are your, as well as my, leaders. It is instructed for us that we are in ' no need for anyone to be teaching us' and to let the 'anointing inside ' us 'teach' us <b>'ALL</b> things.' (1 John 2:27) By doing this and cleaning and clearing our hearts with Truth and Love ...how can one go wrong? Yes Those today will decieve you to believe that 'the end is near' and the 'due time has approached.' They will enforce their beliefs upon you that indeed you must be part of their religion/organization in order to gain salvation. Yet this is false. Salvation comes through Christ,(John 3:16) not an organization. All religions will say they are The Truth, The Way and Life ...but there is only ONE who are these things, Christ (John 14:6). We are cautioned that many during that time ' will say <b>'I am he'</b> (The Truth, The Way, The Life) <b> AND 'the due time has approached' </b> yet with this we must take heed to the warning as to 'NOT go after them' (Luke 21:8) Yes even today people can and have been misled. Jah of Armies and Jah-Eshua do not wish for you to 'sacrifice, sacrifice, sacrifice.' For It is written 'I want mercey <b>NOT</b> sacrifice' (Mt 12:7) There is only one thing one must do in order to gain 'eternal life' and that is Believe in Jah-Eshua! That is all. (John 6:47) I pray this has helped you Your Servent in Christ Fiveshadows

Dearest IW, The portions you read in the "Greek Scriptures" due mention the 'end' of times.. but it is not mentioned often. The reason for this is because that was not the focus of the true faith, nor was it the 'motivation' by which our brothers displayed their faith among men. The Revelation was NOT a revelation devoted solely to how the 'end' would come.. it was "a revelation of Jesus Christ AND of the things that must shortly take place." This was given to John (which the Catholic Church divided into two books) to be shared with the slaves of Christ. The Revelation is indeed available for all to read, but not all (as you stated yourself included) understand it. It was written FOR those to whom our Lord appointed beforehand. The whole focus and motivation of the true faith in our Lord Jesus was the free gift that is available to "anyone asking, anyone seeking, anyone wishing, anyone knocking." It is the free gift of holy spirit and anyone who drinks such spirit will INSTANTLY receive everlasting life. This indeed was GOOD NEWS and it spread rapidly. Religious men were JEALOUS of the free gift because it was not granted them to offer it, nor did they want to compromise their religious beliefs in order to recieve it. They LOVED the glory of "men" more than the glory of God. They did not want to be disfellowshipped from the synagogue and be spoken badly against by their fellow Pharisees. So, these men attempted to silence the disciples by any means necessary. The free gift was causing people to stop attending the religious services because they were able to hear directly from God through Christ for themselves. They did not need "men" to teach them any longer. This activity was hurting their church... as well as their income. So these men lashed out against them, persecuted them, flogged them, and told them to no longer speak to them on the basis of the name of Jesus (not "Jehovah"). The teaching was also exposing the religious leaders' BLOODGUILT that they had against the Son of Jah. They could not handle this so they did their BEST to stop this teaching from spreading all throughout their country. The disciples were NOT "living for the end" as Jehovah's Witnesses do.. they were living to keep offering the free gift of holy spirit and share the everlasting life that they themselves received... for FREE! And the invitation STILL goes out to "anyone wishing, anyone asking, anyone hearing anyone knocking." The holy spirit is the free gift of God offered by the hand of Jesus Christ our Lord. Anyone who is desiring of it will be given it. And through that holy spirit.. you will be taught ALL things so that you will need NO MAN to be teaching you anything at all. Revelation 22:17 1 John 2:27
    Peace to you, Aaron
