Mike, Are you really going to go bother people with the Watch Tower lies on a holiday ? I guess I have not read many of your posts, so I don't know where you stand. Are you still a JW in good standing ?

Since it is a political holiday, JWs were not supposed to particiapte or share in festivities. I grew up a Catholic, so we enjoyed everything. As JWs, our family watched fireworks from a distance. Now we enjoy everything to the full.

Come to think about it, JWs are never in "good standing" because the rank-n-file can never do enough. They always need to put in more hours, more time for meetings, more time preparing for the meetings, more time reading and underliningThe Watchtower, and more time following the latest whims of the elders. "Good standing" for a JW is always just a little out of reach--they need to do more.

what's weird is, on the fourth of July all the witnesses would go to the local park to watch the fireworks and listen to the 1812 overture, they would have cookouts and 'celebrate' the fourth in every way except hang a flag or admit they live in a great country. That's all.

What about big turkey dinners on thanksgiving. We always had them in my house.

A week after christmas we would have 'family day'.

There is no real distinction, except in their minds.

Most here watch fireworks but don't talk about the fact they did with the others.

Birthdays they always did something special-- a day for just that person right before or after the actual birthday as if that somehow made the whole thing different.

Christmas? Depended on who. They complain about all the pagan christmas shows and decorations and that demon of a Santa Claus, usually rather rudely and loudly wherever they are as if to look ultra holy.

I think the JWs that really HATE Holidays are the ones who were either raised that way or had bad experiences with the 'worldly' holidays so they like hating it. I know my aunt is like that. Grew up in a bad worldy home and neverh ad the $ for gifts and didn't like feeling ashamed about that so she LIKED having an excuse to give up the whole thing.

generally watching fire works, or picnics, etc. is not deemed wrong in itself; however, if the appearance is that you are participating in the 4th of July then it could be construed that you are a patriot like everyone else. therefore, it is the appearance that you give others that makes it wrong.

...but then we all know that JDubs aren't human and can't be amused by things that amuse others of the "world"
