I absolutely believe that they would not recognize him. I have many times wondered this exact question to myself. dj
I think the question is moot. They have already rejected him in their attitudes and conduct.
He said to feed the sheep. The trash they are putting forth can hardly be called food.
In the parable of the wheat and the weeds he forbid them to attempt to judge which was which. They spend nearly all of their time doing just that.
In the parable of the tax collector and the Pharisee, as well as such passages as Luke 17:10 they are counselled to keep humble attitudes. Instead, they continually try to gain even greater honor and prestige than they already have. Where do they even begin to live up to it?
We could go on and on in this vein. The bottom line is that they have Jesus words, thoughts, and desires in front of them now, yet these are studiously ignored in favor of their own personal agendas.
They are, in short, worshipping themselves.
