I have just been told this evening that my ex-cong were yesterday 'advised' NOT to watch Panorama as it was 'all apostates.' This info came straight from an elder and I actually asked him to repeat what he said in case i misheard. Yes, he said, the society recommended that we don't watch it. And they didn't.
JW's told NOT to watch Panorama.......??

I think we just have a case of two different people having a different experience. One congregation clearly didn't tell people not to watch it but it appears that people at a different congregation received a different message.
The WT is very good at giving statements that don't forbit something but clearly say that you should not do it ... stressing certain words:
"Therefore ... it would be unwise wouldn't it brothers ..."

Yes, I think some congregations 'read between the lines' and decided to 'advise' cong members not to watch it. I dont doubt that most congs probably didnt say anything either way but for those that did, it seems the majority of the cong members did as they were told and didnt watch it.
One elders wife I spoke to had this reaction when i asked her if she had seen it.
"That rubbish? ha! Wouldnt give it the time of day. Its all obviously ridiculous lies and Apostates trying to cause trouble.'
And they reckon they aren't brainwashed eh?

It's almost midnight, this is how things stand locally.
Dub-in-the-Pub came into my local pub tonight, but denied watching the programme, saying he was elsewhere. After a few Guinness he admitted that he had looked out of his flat window, opposite the pub, and seen me and Her Ladyship scurrying home at 10. 10pm yesterday to catch the broadcast.
So he watched it too. He's waiting on Jehovah to sort it out.
Ray & Sausage Lucy. Ray was again thrown out of his home by Lucy yet again, this happened yesterday. Lucy's fleshly brother is an elder in CLEVEDON congregation. His name is John Castellari. He took pity on Ray, said his sister was a nut-case, why not come and stay with him until his sister's fit of pique had subsided?
Ray did this yesterday and moved in with John. John then told Ray that he would have to spend the evening alone, because, he, John, was meeting up with a few dozen witnesses so's they could all watch Panorama together!
I've invited Ray to my barbie. He might even have Sausage Lucy with him if she hasn't had him arrested again.

I just love it when angry little JW's speak their minds. Rachel has been posting here today with lots of malice and is being very accusatory. It is very obvious that she is young. But I'd like to thank her for entertaining me.
Thank you Rachel.

I do happen to know that a member of Bethel phoned one of her relatives in the UK and specifically told her NOT to watch the programme. This sister didnt then because the impression was given that if you did watch, you were an apostate!
How sad that the Witnesses are not allowed to make up their own minds on what they can watch.
Ive heard it said a few times on here and totally agree that if the programme was based on the Catholic Church or any other religion for that matter, the Witnesses would not only be encouraged to watch but no doubt statistics and details would be memorised to be quoted on the ministry and very probably published in the next exciting edition of 'Watching the World' !!!!!!!!!!!!
The fact they are told not to watch just proves something in itself. Lets be fair, the way the elders/GB acted on the programme was enough to put doubt in the minds of the faithful. How embarrasing.

Hey Rachel..........
can you really be so closed minded as to think that everyone on here is lying???????/
If you watched the programme then surely you can see how easily the truth can be used as a weapon. Just because you personally werent told not to watch, dont assume that this is the same for every other witness.
I do have a question for you though, particularly as you are still a witness (bless!)......
How do you feel the elder in the programme not to mention the unforgettable performance of the GB member dealt with the questions? I for one was bowled over with the wealth of information and helpful attitude that was shown to the reporter investigating an extremely serious matter. Always good to see the witnesses lost for words and turning their backs on the cameras. Doesnt that say anything to you?
It does me...........

The Society has always used double-talk to say one thing but mean another. The Society likes to throw words and phrases like 'reccommend', 'encourage', and 'in the best interest of' around to get people to do something. I remember in a meeting with a CO he read some instructions from the Society, in their they used the word reccommend. After the letter the CO asked the elders then what should one do when the Society reccommends us to do something? The answer was you do it, no questions asked.
So if the Society sends a warning re. a specific topic, w/o spelling out exactly what one should do, the dubs are to read between the lines and draw the Society's conclusion on matters, otherwise one's faith might be called into question. So it is easy to see where after a letter is read some elders might reason with a publisher in the following manner:
elder: So brother/sister publisher, after listening to that letter from the Society, what do you suppose would be the wise course to take let say for example with watching shows like Panorama/Dateline?
publisher: In view of the warnings from the Faithful and Discreet Slave, I think it would be in my best interest not to watch any shows that call into question Jehovah's (Society's) arrangements.
elder: Do you suppose that Satan can use such shows to bring reproach on Jehovah's name and the congregation?
publisher: Oh, I am sure he can and does. I will make sure my family is studying for the upcoming meeting when the show is on.
elder: You are doing a good thing brother/sister.
So as you can see how even though the elder does not tell the publisher what to do, by his leading questions he gets the publisher to say exactly what the Society's wants him/her to do. This is repeated time and time again in many cong's. throughout the world.
