When I was in Russia several years ago, I bought a bottle of Stoli (slang for Stolichnaya) at the Moscow airport for $US10. Here it costs about $35 for the same sized bottle.

And having a fondness for all things Russian, I drink Russian vodka by choice. Straight or mixed, doesn't matter, I love it!

I used to drink Izmira, a Turkish Vodka, which was distilled from white beets. To me it was much smoother than some of the other brands.

Does Vodka have to be Russian?

No. Vodka has no ethnic preferences.

While Stolichnaya is made in Russia, the name is an invention of PepsiCo, which imports it. The Russians never heard of a Vodka called "Stoli" until a US Mega-Corporation coined it.

At least that is what several Russian acquantances told me. Nonetheless, Russians use 100 year-old-technology (very "outdated" ) to make their Vodka and it is still at least equal to the best Vodka made elsewhere in the world.

Some years ago in my halcyon days I made a $50 bet in a bar that I could tell the difference between 1) Well Vodka (the kind they pour for generic Vodka drinks), 2) Smirnoff Vodka and 3) Stoli. I was totally sober and blindfolded when they poured three shot glasses with a sip of each flavor.

The well vodka tasted bitter, and the Stoli was so much more refined than it that the Smirnoff was easily identified as the third vodka because of the vast difference between the Stoli and the well vodka.

That's the long version in answer to your question. The short version is "yes, some vodkas do taste better than others." That's why when I drink vodka I buy the cheapest crap I can find and mix it with diesel fuel or oil I've just drained from my car. In the latter case, I toss in the oil filter for a little zing.

    Farkel,

I bought Stolichnaya. I just called it Stoli for short for the story. The vodka I bought was definitely Stolichnaya, made and bottled in Russia.

I never said otherwise. I said that PepsiCo came up with the name Stolichnaya for that vodka.

    Hi Farkel,

Which diesel fuel/oil would you suggest?

    Hugs,
