I have teenagers...and they think I'm not too shabby as far as old fuddy duddy mothers go. I let them play their music (sometimes) in my car...and they download their own songs and burn their own CD's...so we have a lot of boom boom pumping out of the house and my car. But there comes a time when enough is enough, and every now and then on our daily trip into school, I put on my 'best of the bee gees' and I'm sure you can imagine the protests I get from doing that. I just tell them: you give little, you take a little...and so they roll their eyes at me as they do.

I think any loud music in a public place is intrusive in my books...not just hip hop. I agree with Dakota, its all about manners. I must encourage my teenagers to learn sign language now, so that they're one step ahead when they go deaf.

I made a deal with my girls when they were in their teens. THey could play whaetever music they liked, as long as it was kept reasonable in loudness. The alternative was that I would blast them out with my old foggie music.

For some reason, hearing Hippy Hippy Shake and Surfer Bird at 3 million decibels didn't appeal to them

I agree that the "boom boom" music is annoying as hell. Now, I'm the first one to admit that I like really loud hard rock music, but it doesn't carry or vibrate like the "boom boom " music from the car. Personally, and it's just my taste, but I think rap, hip-hop and the like sucks BIG TIME.

Does the bass is "boom boom" music sound like that live? If not, than it's a distortion of already crappy music, IMHO. In either case, it still sucks. There's definately some catchy lyrics in some of the rap/hip-hop, but I just don't like the music. Music?

Oh, I am so-o-o-o glad I'm not alone.

I had to sell a condo after 3 years of listening to that hip-hop rap crap coming up from the downstairs apartment. In the middle of the night. Full blast. The guy had 2 band-size speakers in his bedroom (which was under my bedroom) and partied all night. He also had a police band radio, I swear, because everytime I called the police, he would turn them off just before they got there. He was the brother of the owner (who left for places unknown) and not a renter. The association couldn't (or wouldn't do anything about him). The other neighbors were too afraid of him to do anything. So after 3 years of fighting with him (and no sleep), I sold the condo and lost my shirt. Turned out he has a rap sheet (so fitting) a mile long. I checked at the County Sheriff's office. A gang member. Now I live in an over 55 community and my neighbors may be old but they are quiet! (although I can still hear the boom-booms from 3 blocks away on a major street).

I had a car pull up to me once which I felt a long, long time before he got to the light. My heart was even vibrating. I had to put my hand over my chest. There was absolutely no music; only a vibrating boom-boom. Ridiculous. Are there any cops on this Board? If so, tell me WHY CAN'T THEY OUTLAW THESE THINGS.

Now I know a lot of people reading this board probably like Rap but IMHO.....it stinks! As far as I'm concerned, it ruined the music industry when it came out and I wish it would die a very fast death!

Just a few points from what I read here.....

    1. It is illegal.. but for it to be enforced, the cops need to carry a dB meter so they can have proof of it, so most cops don't even bother. BUT in some towns/cities they have by-laws that say something along the lines of "sound that can be heard from more than X blocks" and usually in those cities the cops are much more active.

    2. Wattage is highly overrated.. you might think that they're pumping out tens of thousands of watts but in reality, it's really not that much. For ex.: one of my friend has a 1000W amp with a 15" sub..... pushing out 145dB (please note that a Jet engine at 3m is pushing out only 140dB and that the threshold of pain is somewhere between 120-130dB). Most cars that have more than 5000W of power will actually need reinforced plexi-glass instead of the glass window just because of the sound pressure, they'd blow out... and NO ONE can stay in a car at that volume.. unless you like bleeding from your ears and throwing up all over yourself...

    3. Hearing loss is mostly caused by higher frequencies... The frequencies used for 'boom boom' will just make you sick.

I just wanted to say a little something about it.. figured I should try to get my post count up

As a sound tech on 'permanent vacation' now, I've had my share of loud concerts and I know I lost some of my hearing.. considering I'm only 23, it kinda sucks. The thing I hate the most is when you get that "sound of silence" thing going... arrggh It drives me crazy!

The noise referred to in this thread IS illegal, but the cops just won't enforce it. One reason is that it's hard to enforce. The offenders see the cops comin' and turn it down.

My friend in Savannah had his own twist. One Saturday morning, he's laid back reading a book, and all of a sudden all that BOOM BOOM crap starts up and doesn't just drive by, it stays.

My friend looks out the window from his second floor apartment and there are two guys waxing a car which has all its doors open and the "music" coming from within.

My friend, the gun collector, walks out on the balcony holding a Winchester model 12 twelve guage shotgun. He screams at them. They can barely hear him, but they CAN see the shotgun. They turn it down so they can hear. First he pumps a shell into the chamber, then he tells them, "you turn that god damn thing OFF. If I hear the slightest peep out of that stereo again, I'm coming down there and I WILL blast it right out of your dashboard. Try me." Then, without waiting for a response, he walks back inside.

Not a peep. Not a sound. Silent as a church.

My approach was a little different. Same senario, but late in the afternoon. After a day of listening to this shit, I'm furious. At three in the morning, I get up and walk down the street to the offending auto. Lucky for me the windows are all down about an inch. That's common in the south. I do it too. I have a plastic squeeze bottle of sulphuric acid. I direct the stream at the stereo. I go back home. Of course, this was way before I started my spiritual journey and I wouldn't think of doing that any more. But back then it was really something. And you know what? ALL the stereos in my neighborhood suddenly became very quiet.

If the cops won't do it we have to do it ourselves.

Ever notice that in about 90% of those boom booms the speakers are ripped to shreds, and yet the owners keep 'em overdriven? It's just noise! I don't see why they don't just dispense with anything but the drums so that it sounds just like what it is: the natives being restless tonight.

let me play the part of the (semi) apologist:

loud car stereos started out as a part of hip hop culture in the early 80s. kids created block parties out in their neighborhoods and often rigged up sound systems by illegally tapping into street lights. this eventually passed as growing gang activity and police raids as a result became all too common. the zulu nation was formed in part to negotiate gang fueds and to keep the neighborhoods more safe. as time went on, souped up car systems became the way to have outdoor parties. now some how in the mid to late 80's, the outdoor party aspect of the loud car system dropped the party aspect and became a status symbol - the louder it was the cooler the driver and associated riders were. hence brings us to today where most kids bangin' their systems have no idea where the idea came from or how much money the stereo manufacturers made from this long ago fad that is now a permanent fixture in youth culture.

I came of age when hip hop was breaking into the mainstream. a lot of my becoming an adult is tied up with the golden age of rap circa 1984-1989. I love classic rap.

    HOWEVER....(hence the "semi" part)

IMO rap dallied in the "gansta" phase much too long and lost almost all of the positive, unique voices from its golden age. there are a few left but their popularity is miniscule in comparison with the gansta/playa/playboy/millionaire-wannabe rappers that are currently popular. and, hip hop lover that I am, I still get tired of the same "ole shit" over and over booming at me from over a mile away. youth culture always forgets what came before and why. that is why they still play their music too loud. kids will be kids....with better toys as time marches on.

Over here in the uk,this boom boom stuff from cars that makes your teeth vibrate is illegal as well,it is enforced, not only is the equipment confiscated, but the car as well.

I have to be a bit carefull here though,as like Animal,I am still into motorbikes, and Deep Purple/Led Zep/Ac-Dc,at rediculous decibels still gives me a buzz, occasioally now though.

Them darn kids and their rock'n'roll music!!!!!!!!

You lot are aging yourselves. Hip Hop happens to be the most popular of music genres among teenagers and twenty-somethings. Similar comments have been made about other genres as they had their time in the spotlight of popularity...Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, RockNRoll, Modern Jazz, Swing/Hard Bop, etc. Every genre has some great music....and a lot of crap.
