I found a strange explanation on this site: http://users.crocker.com/~lwm/all_along_the_watchtower/ . Does Bob Dylan really wrote this song with this purpose??

I often wondered if the all along the watchtower song had anything to do about the watchtower .It does seem to have alot of symbolism seemingly biblical in reference.I don't know if anyone has ever asked him if this was the case but I along with you would be interested in the answer to this peculiar song .

Bob dylan's real name is Robert Zimmerman. He is a jew. When referring to isaiah, that should be figured in too. Read more @ http://www.radiohazak.com/Dylan.html

Bobs real name IS Bob Dylan. It was legally changed and as such its not just a stage name.

His birthname was Robert Zimmermann. He was "disfellowshipped" by the Jewish religious community when he embraced Christianity, but it seems since then he has been "reinstated".

My personal belief is that he still holds a personal relationship with Jesus but keeps it quiet so as to maintain contact with his family who remain in the Jewish faith.

    Now, that sure sounds familiar???????!!!

The site laid this time line on dylan's life

  • Changing his name from Zimmerman in the early '60s.
  • Considering moving to a kibbutz in the early '70s.
  • Converting to born-again Christianity in the late '70s.
  • Studying with Lubavitch Hasidim in the early '80s.
  • Hasidim study and teach kaballa. That's active/aggressive magic, as you may know. It's true that people can continue to identify w aspects of jesus even after they outgrow christendom.

I've always loved hendrix's version of this song. I am not sure about the references there. it feels a bit contrived. has dylan ever discussed more as to what he was thinking when he wrote the song? IMO, the song's symbolism is open ended and can really mean any number of things to the people who listen to it.

I doubt if Dylan even knew what he meant when he wrote that song. / You Know

As much as I hate to agree with You Know on anything, I think he's right about this. In the the sixties, it was very common for songwriters to use vaguely worded phrases to make the stoned hippies believe that they were on a different spiritual plane than everyone else. The Beatles, the Doors, Dylan....they all did it and often admitted that the symbolism didn't mean anything. When asked to analyse "The End", John Densmore said "...the guys in the band don't even know what it means..." Regarding "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite", John Lennon said it didn't mean anything----he copied it practically word - for - word from a circus poster hanging in his living room. But letting the kids think differently sure sold a lot of records.
