My favorite car was one I bought in '89. I was 17 and retired the old Mustang II (Pinto-Mustang) given me by my grandfather.
My dad and I went car-shopping one day and this bright silver behemoth at one lot virtually shouted to both of us. A 1978 Dodge Monaco. Same as a Plymouth Fury. Thousands of them died horrible deaths as police cars in shows like 'The A-Team' in the 80's. This one was a cherry. 32,000 original miles by one owner, an elderly couple. For real. The paint was like new, the interior was like new, the vinyl top was like new, the air conditioning worked. And back in the days those cars were made, Dodge made full-size sedans that rode much better than Ford or Chevy. Gotta love that torsion-bar front end! That car would cruise at 100. It handled like a car half its size, and that's outstanding for 70's automotive technology. Plus if I "kept my foot out of it" I could get around 20 mpg average thanks to that "voodoo" lean-burn system Chrysler put on their cars back then. I would kill to find another Monaco/Fury in similar condition now. Ahhhh the things I could do! Show those "Fast and the Furious" teenyboppers a thing or two!
Damn I miss that car! Now I have a 91 Geo Storm. Just for the hell of it I put on a header and MSD Ignition and while the gas mileage is great, it just doesn't have the low-end power I like. Top end is great though. I don't shift into 5th until around 60-70. But the car is so light that it gets pretty squirrely at high speeds. I need to lower it about an inch or so.
Next car I'm thinking maybe a retired Ford Crown Vic police cruiser. You can pick them up for next to nothing but count on rebuilding the engine and transmission. But believe me when I tell you, just as any cop will, that Crown Vics will go unbelievably fast (like 140 or 150 mph). And they ride and handle great - with the proper tweaking at the hands of a good tech. Hey that's me!
TeeJay, great truck! I've always preferred Chevy trucks. Have you had dual exhaust put on yet? I can't even count how many Chevy trucks I've run "cat-back" duals on. Once I got good at it, I could put on a set of cat-backs in 30 minutes by myself. When the 2000 models came out, I was the first tech in Macon to run duals on one.
Francois, I love Preludes. Ok, I love ALL Hondas but anyway. Oh.....THIS JUST IN: C. B. MITCHELL IS STILL DEAD!!!!
<<grin>>
