For the most part, I think mainstream black AND white folks couldn't care less whether that flag lives or dies. It's a non-issue that flares up amongst the "extremists" once in awhile and usually drags the rest of us reluctantly into the battle. I THINK I am sensing that correctly. Those of us who don't really care one way or the other, I THINK, would like to just see the flag go away so we can be done with the stupidity.

If we get rid of something every time it gets hijacked by nutters and extremists, then we can say goodbye to the German National anthem, the Union Jack, the Premier League, God save the Queen, 10 green bottles (10 German bombers) and Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau (whales! whales! bloody great fish are whales..)
Today it is the flag, tomorrow something else. It is TOO EASY to scapegoat symbol, whether you think it represents racism or not, rather than think critically about the whole race situation. Seriously, is it just me or has anyone else noticed how there seems to be a lot more reports of racists white on black violence appearing lately (and so close to a national election too). Did our whole country just all of a sudden become more racist? How come the black on black / black on white violence isn't getting reported as much?

We know most who like to fly this flag are not racist bigots. Insensitive and self centered? To some degree, probably. Undereducated? Most likely. Silly? Absolutely.
Another point for those that yammer on about states' rights...
States rights only became an issue in the south because the south wanted to preserve slavery. The divide over this issue really goes back to the time of Jamestown/Plymouth where the more southern of the two settlements was based in trade and wanted every advantage possible, (hence why indentured servitude devolved in outright slavery). Plymouth had its own issues, (including that of religious intolerance), however since it was not a settlement based in trade, both it and the northern culture that grew from it, had little need to care about profit potential being adversely affected by labor.
No one in the north really cared about this issue of states rights because they had no dog in the fight. Slavery was the dog.
So much for us anti-confederate flag types being PC, huh?

True to a point but the Union flag and God Save The Queen are have official and national status. Whilst they can be used by extremists in jingoistic actions they are equally used by people of all backgrounds, colours and creeds as part of an overall national identity. Black athletes, for example, are equally proud to wear the flag, sing the anthem and represent the UK in sports events as any white athlete. Although Britain has a colonial history and certainly cannot claim to be free of racism, the flag and anthem do not evoke such strong feelings when used in genuinely non-extremist situations and it is possible to delineate between the appropriate and inappropriate use of the the Union flag and the national anthem.
As far as I know, the Confederate flag has no nationally official status. I agree however, that it might be possible that the passing of time may have diminished it's intrinsic link with a war closely associated with slavery and may have more general, idealistic connotations - the question is has it or has it done so enough so that it can readily be accepted as representative of the ideals of the majority of the people who live in the Southern states?
It might be being used as a scapegoat for wider issues but if few black people can find any positive association with the Confederate flag then surely questions over it's use, especially in an official capacity.

I've read many books. The KKK existed long before Hitler was born. Hitler did not and could have started the ideologies of the KKK. Just because that is true and you got called out on it is no reason for you to take your ball and go home or start calling names.
Racism goes both ways, but you wouldn't know about the plague of black on white knockout game attacks
(some have been fatal) from watching/reading the mainstream news media.- gotta love that plague word- it's great
