NEVER fish off the company pier!!! I did it once and it was terrible. It started off as a friendship and it worked its way into coffee breaks, lunches, and finally into dinner and dating. It worked for almost two years, but the hiding and secrecy was so difficult. The breakup was terrible. We still worked for the same company. Even though we didn't expect our coworkers to take sides with either of us, it happened. We both lost friends in the process of this as well. Just look at work as work. Go in there every morning, do your job, and leave at night. I don't look at it as a place to make friends with anyone anymore. Work isn't my life anymore. Life is what happens when you leave the office.

Nope, not a good idea. Things can become too complicated if things get a little too cozy or if the relationship ends. There is no such thing as "confidential" - you would be surprised what other people can find out.

The company I work (most large corporations have) for has guidelines regarding interwork relationships. Depending upon both parties' positions, the company will request that one if not both parties are transferred to different departments, locations or one party is requested to resign.

It is always nice to have your own space and your own thing.

It all depends....we just had a couple get married at work who had a successful office romance. This was because they worked in different departments, under different bosses, and in different buildings. They went to lunch together but they weren't all over each other during office hours. But for each good story there are 10 bad ones, because when things go south it can get really ugly for everyone in the office.

It's awfully easy to get something started at work. But it's just like picking up a poisonous snake. How ya gonna put it down after it has wrapped itself around your arm?

And stopping a work relationship is just as difficult.

I wouldn't do it if I were you. There's too many pebbles on the beach for you to deliberately pick up the one with all the sharp, cutting places on it.

Wherever people congregate, sex is going to happen.

I've seen sex at work break up marriages, result in bitter hurt feelings, and come close to legal action. It complicates your life unnecessarily.

What I've noticed is that usually somebody's spouse feels neglected or is looking for a little excitement. The person mistakes an office romance for being the love of their life or something just irresistable. The office romance doesn't work out and their marriage is destroyed or they are nearly divorced. You may end up being called to give your deposition in a divorce suit if the object of your desire is married. It doesn't feel good to be a part of breaking up someone's marriage; even more so if they have children. The resulting gossip, as previously stated, does nothing good for your work environment or your career at your place of employment. It never stays a secret.

If you are looking for sex, there are plenty of people to have it with than your coworkers. Stick to fooling around with members of this board who never gossip and know how to keep secrets.

I've made it a life long practice not to ever work with someone I'm having sex with. "Sorry honey, can't do the dishes, that's your job".
