"Strategy" in a game in which numbers are drawn randomly?

Strangely, there is strategy. You can't improve your odds at all (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 is just as likely as any other result) BUT there are certain numbers that people play more - ones that make patterns on the tickets or birthdates etc... which mean that if you did happen to win with those numbers you'll be splitting the money with more winners.

So, the strategy of picking numbers that other people are less likely to pick because of these reasons means that if you do happen to win (no more or less chance) you'll at least have increased the chances of having a larger share of the pot.

You you pick 1 - 6 and won the jackpot you'd likely be sharing it with several thousand other people (yes, that stat surprised me too).

Yup I buy a lottery ticket. I even used to buy the odd one when I was a dubbie. Gulp. Just made sure no one saw me do it.

James Mixon, if you won millions, would you claim the winnings under your name or would you claim the winnings under a Trust to remain anonymous?

I got 5 out of 6 once, about 20 years ago when I lived in Canada. Won about $1,600. Missed the 6th number by 1. My 6th number was 7, the winning 6th number was 6. Oh well.

I'd claim anonymously, via trust,if I won big now. Winning would bring out all sorts begging/demanding and I'd worry about my safety. If I couldn't claim anonymously, I'd have a plane ticket booked and leave for 3 months minimum.

Yes, that's actually true, I've been reading about that. There are certain probabilities that come into play. For example, the probability of the same winning numbers hitting twice in a row is more unlikely than a different set of numbers.

Joan R. Ginther, who has won 4 different million dollar lottery payouts is a former math professor with a PhD from Stanford University specialising in statistics. She refuse to give any interviews..

According to Forbes, the residents of Bishop, Texas, where she bought the tickets, seem to believe God was behind it all.

the probability of the same winning numbers hitting twice in a row is more unlikely than a different set of numbers.

As I said, the lottery is a tax on those who do not understand the laws of probability.

Yes, I agree with sir 82, it is a self taxation, but it is also entertainment.

If someone is entertained, has the discretionary income to do it, and wants to spend it for such then go for it.

But if someone is spending the bills money on it, then it is dangerous and wrong.

It's easy to get caught up in the dream of winning the lottery money, and ignore the cold hard statistical facts.
