That's right folks, all video and computer games are now banned in Greece!

That law is almost as breathtakingly idiotic as the DMCA! Good Ghod! Imagine if you were a Greek game developer and you lost your job because of something silly like this!

Well obviously, greece is the next country to bomb, after iraq.

I don't really see a problem. If you really wanted to play videogames you could just leave the country or go elsewhere where they were permitted. You can't have illegal gambling and this is a perfectly reasonable way to stop it.

    LMAO @ Path

Thats right... if you don't like something... the obvious solution is to leave the country without even trying to change anything.

    Path,

Their 'perfectly reasonable' measure was to ban ALL games, including computer chess and Tetris on a PDA, because they can't tell the difference between online gambling and private gaming... and you don't see a problem with it? Your solution is that anyone not happy with it should just leave the country?

Well, thanks for the post. I've been wondering what makes you tick. Now I think I know.

    Hmmm

    Hmmmm,

I am not sure that I know what makes Path tick .... but I would be willing to bet (pardon the pun) that he/she was being sarcastic.

I see nothing wrong with the Greek law regarding video games. If the people who live in Greece aren't happy with it, they will hold it's author(s) and supporters politically accountable. Also, the law could have the desirable effect of improving the physical fitness of the populace, by denying them an entertaining and leisurely attractive activity that encourages a sedentary lifestyle.

    BobsGirl,

    I considered it

    and 1,

You can't mandate better physical fitness. Besides, they said it was because they wanted to curb online gambling and admitted they were too clueless to know the difference. Should they outlaw all automobiles to curb prostitution?

Maybe not, but there's nothing wrong with encouraging it through legislation. Poor physical fitness of the populace results in substantial medical costs for the government. That is certainly a compelling government interest.

If the social benefit of curbing prostitution exceeds the social cost of outlawing automobiles, then the answer to your question is yes.

As I stated before, the people of Greece are responsible for making their own rules that they have to live with. If this game ban is not liked by the majority of the people, then those responsible for it will pay the price at the polls. We ought to respect other countries by showing them deference, especially on something as insignificant as this. The Greeks practiced democracy long before we did!
