Poor physical fitness of the populace results in substantial medical costs for the government.
Only up to a certain level. I agree that the hideously obese (which we refer to as 'zeppelins' because, well, they LOOK like zeppelins) should do something about their size.
But most people who aren't 'in shape' live perfectly natural, LONG, healthy lives. Indeed, if current research on aging is accurate - a relatively sedentary lifestyle (I'm not talking couch potato here, just laid back) actually provides a much longer lifespan - less oxidation occurs.
by denying them an entertaining and leisurely attractive activity that encourages a sedentary lifestyle.
Out of curiosity, do you think people who sit and play games long enough for it to be a health concern to the government will, when banned from doing so, suddenly feel invigorated and jump up and start doing situps and running miles or something?
Don't think so.
They'll just turn on the TV - which requires even less participation and not only removes what little physical activity could be involved with game playing but then removes any mental activity as well.
