Near death experiences, what do they mean?

Anyone here had one, what was it like?

Anyway there was a resent disscusion of this phenonema on the telly. Now I'm not concerning myself here with is there life after death but with this point, when people have near death experiences they are measured to be brain dead, no activity can be measured in the brain, yet many report seeing what was happening to them or voices and visions. If this is true then consciousness is continuing while the brain is inactive. This is not sleep , where the brain is active , but the brain is to all intents and purposes dead.

If, and I say if this is true, then consciousness is not solely linked to brain activity. That would have major implecations as to the nature of consciousness.Where exactly doeas our consciousness reside? Is the brain just a means for it to recieve information and in fact consciousness does not exist there but works throught it instead. This does not have to mean we have an imortal soul etc, but for example, maybe hidden dimentions in space could be the source of our consciousness,or someting else, not just the world we are aware of.

Hi Sleepy: Near Death experiences, as far as I can tell, simply mean near death. Some argue that the fantastic mental images one has of being lifted up and observing things while they are unconscious is evidence of a soul about to depart ... others see it as an active brain being stimulated by synaptic flashes, chemical changes that affect brain function ... who really knows?

The point I am focusing on is those who were rejestered as BRIAN DEAD , with no measurable activity in the brain, yet still reported seeing or hearing things.Actually death is not as easy to qualify I you might think, is it when your heart stops, your brain, some have come back from having both.

I want to know how this experiences touch on what consciousness is, not about whether people are dead or not.

NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCES -- is just that Near death NOT totally dead the brain is still working--my daughter has had a couple she shared with me...I will have her share with you if you so choose...she has what is called prophetic dreams as well--ask an active JW and of course they would say she is demonized but then as a kid my mom and I was labeled as being demonized and bad association to boot--I just say LISA / I and Mamie kitty are just unique in my opinion...(((HUGS)))) queenie

Just because doctors can't measure brain activity doesn't mean it isn't there. It just means their instruments aren't sensitive enough to measure some of them.

Many near death experiences are very similar to dissociative experiences that trauma victims experience

in one of my classes this was discussed about how folks saw God, Jesus, and Peter at the Pearly Gates-

the research pointed to the exp was based on ones religious life, if you were a christian you saw jesus ,

if you were musluim you saw mohamid,

if you were of some other faith you saw the leader of that faith-

so no good ole Bible Believing Baptist saw Mohomid waiting for him with 73 Virgins-

the theory was that the mind produced the results based on what was feed into it for the last 20+yrs as it were

    Christian in = Christian out

    Muslium in = Muslium out

Who can prove what the cause of these visions are? It's a mystery to me. My friend who visits me had one and he can't explain it either. He was on the operating table and could see everything going on from above. There were others there also and he asked about which religion was right and they said religion didn't matter. He never was a JW. He also saw a nurse drop something and the doctor cursed the girl. When he woke up he told the doctor he should't talk to her that way and the doctor asked how did he know what happened. He died and was brought back. There were other things said but I forgot them.

It makes me wonder when they can see things not visible from their position on the operating table. One of those mysteries of death we can't know until we get there, and may not know then.

Nerve impulses at the junctions of an axon terminal to a neuron in an individuals brain are working overtime due to physiological trauma and subsequent shock.

... or do persons not yet conceived ponder near birth experiences?

People may flip on me for this but I don't care. I'm entitled to my opinion.

I find it impossible to believe that this is all there is. I think there are different dimensions and perhaps even reincarnation. It's unfortunate that past-life counsellors make a mockery of it. Who knows what is beyond the black holes? THere is just too much that we do not understand, and just because it isn't understandable doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It's interesting to contemplate on rather than to shut one's mind on the subject.

I often wonder if what you serve is what you get - as in Christians get their heaven/hell; Muslims get their numerous virgins etc. (just a thot)
