I think the more pertinent question should be " Who has not gotten bad advice from an elder?"

    I thought that too, Sloboy.

The problem is that one elder will tell you one thing.

"Single sisters should get married because the Bible says they will be kept safe through childbearing."

Another brother would be saying at the same time:

"She who stays single will do better."

    What a nuthouse!

After my parents split up, elders told my mum she wasn't to let my non-JW dad see us! She did though.

I suspect if I gathered up all my posts in here I might have the outline for a book.

Min those are just the ones I was told - my kids got others - will work on that later

In retrospect...virtually ALL of the advice I got was pure, simple, unadulterated crap.

In my 40 years in, there were 2 elders, and 2 CO's, who really shared their thoughts with me openly and honestly, and they are all still dear to my heart. I would gladly be friends with them, and maybe someday that will happen. Maybe not.

The rest just spouted WTS garbage.

    This really happened, no kidding.

Years ago, our then PO to me to one side and asked me how often I was engaging in sexual intercourse. When I told him, (I can't believe that I was so dumb!!!) he said that it was much too often and should be limited to once or twice a week at most, or emotional exhaustion would set in.

Brymichmom, I had similar advice and when I had just about enough and I told them I was leaving him, I was asked to consider how the congregation would feel!

Each time he abused me or my children I was to try harder at putting on the new personality.

Don't involve the police or you'll bring reproach on jehovahs name.

All this persecution will make you and your children stronger?

Here's my Top 10 Really, Really, Really Dumb Counsel From Elders:

    1. Don't get into programming, it will take too much time away from the Ministry. (HA! It's my CAREER now, suckers!)

    2. Don't associate with "worldly" girls (*cough*)

    3. Don't go to University. (I didn't anyway, but for my OWN reasons)

    4. Spend more time in the Service, and you will make more friends. (BS. My entire pool of available friendly Dubs was in the same Congregation as me, so how exactly would this help?)

    5. Don't read the Bible too often when commenting in the Watchtower Study (Back then I didn't understand why, but now I do. Just goes to show you twisted this "religion" is!)

    6. Don't make your answers too haughty and "smarty-pants". (i.e. dumb yourself down, Sheep!)

    7. Don't speculate so much. (I speculate a lot!)

    8. Don't do extracurricular sports (Started weight-lifting and other gym stuff immediately after leaving Dubland, gained 10 kilograms in less than a year. Pure muscle baby. LOL)

    9. Go to Bethel (like hell!)

    10. Computers are dangerous for your spiritual health. (Guess I must have a terminal disease of the spiritual variety now, then!)

Just some wonderful snippets of advice I've gotten, the top 10! I could go on for hours, I tell you!

i posted this over on caffeine addiction. I think it belongs here.

once when i was 17 i was openly talking with a sis at the public talk. I was bored and we were just having girltalk but i guess we got too loud, and the speaker stopped his talk and corrected us from the platform. (it was a small cong and half of us were related)

Once years ago at a weekend assembly, i had a can of soda .During the talk i decided i wanted to drink it so i popped the top and it spewed all over the palce. the assembly speaker actually stopped and looked at me. (just lucky i guess)

i once got counseled for leaving pampers in the ladies bathroom(may have deserved that one)i was 17
