This morning our brake technician got [unexpectedly] transferred to another store, and a technician from that store is coming to work at our location. Nobody was happy with that news, especially Rusty (our brake tech). He almost quit on the spot, but decided to stay at least for a while. He already has an interview at a shop closer to where he lives. A 16-bay AIR CONDITIONED shop!!! So now I am no longer the alignment tech. I get Rusty's position as brake technician and the new guy gets alignments/suspension. Which is just great by me. I've specialized in brakes from day one and am very good at it. Only about half of my income at this shop has come from alignments, most of the rest has come from brake work that Rusty couldn't get to. Brake work will pay better for me. Labor rate is $69/hour, of which I get 45% as opposed to getting 40% of a $59.50 alignment. After the news, the driveability tech ("Golden Boy") and I pulled our manager aside for a quick meeting and laid down the law. The new guy does alignments and that's it. Scott (new guy) doesn't even touch Golden Boy's work (driveability: engine work, diagnostics, electrical) or my brake work unless we aren't there (lunch doesn't count as being "not there") or we personally say he can. Dude's gonna starve. But I think that's the plan. I heard thru the grapevine that the brass wants to get rid of him (uses crank and lays out of work a lot) and that's the only way this transfer makes sense. Rusty's just the fall guy in the whole mess, but I kind of think they're trying to run him off too. I'm happy but sad too. I like the move to brakes but I feel real bad for Rusty. Rusty has become a very good friend since we've started working together and I'm going to miss working with him, helping each other out, and having him to talk to when we're not busy. I really hope he gets the job at the air-conditioned shop. Mike.
