Carter said that as a young man he used to be a Jehovah's Witness before he was a Baptist Christian.

"It's hard to grow up with such a foundational system and just let it go. I deeply believe in many Christian values: love people; do the right thing; know that there's good in everyone, that God's looking out for all of us," the former president said.

"Being a Witness was too closed an experience. That's what I walked away from, not the things I believe." Yangon, Burma, Sept. 26, 2013.

    Hi there,

That is mighty interesting. Its the second US president in the 20th century with a JW backround. (The other being Eisenhower)

I have always liked Jimmy Carter, doesn't matter what people say about him (usually lame duck). I had a period of being a Baptist as well, so we got two religions in common :)

The above mentioned article is misquoting this NYTimes article:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2015/07/26/fashion/jimmy-carter-and-jacqueline-woodson-on-race-religion-and-rights.html

Jacqeline Woodson is the one who was a witness and said "being a witness was too closed an experience"

Carter only admitted to doing proselytizing and said nothing about being a JW.

The writers from Christian Post should learn how to read a NY Times article.

The original article in the NY Times is very clear that it was Woodson who was a JW when younger, not Pres. Carter. She seems to speak favorably of the experience. The ChristianPost article is simply wrong.

In the comments section of the first link a correction is made that it is JW (Jaqueline Woodson) that was the JW, but in the the second link Jimmy Carter answers the question:--" how does it feel to have the "Door Slammed in Your Face"? with the reply " they did it not to me but to God" in other words. He must have belonged to some evangelizing sect. but then what do you expect from a a man that also build paper model airplanes?

A lot of religiously based writing tends to ignore facts in favor of writing uplifting and encouraging things to promote their faith-based interests. they are manipulating bad news and discussing persecution. V.o.m has good intentions perhaps, but are flexible regarding facts and sources. Very propaganda driven. No journalistic standards. It's to raise money. Don't expect to find a lot of journalistic integrity in faith(any faith) based newspapers, blogs or newsletters.

Jwdaughter you make a good point. At the same time when misattributions are made, it's also good to see these publications swiftly put the record straight. Oh that the Watchtower would show even half as much willingness to rectify its misattributions!

Yikes! A president of a major nuclear power who can push the button to a nuclear war was once part of a dooms day cult that views the world as under the power Satan the Devil. Or even the fact that it was the wife and not the prez reduces the the shock potential.

Thankfully he was a level headed president that didn't allow residual cult programming of his wife or him to interfere that much in foreign policy.
