The message is clear: If you are intending to come back, play the game and don't you dare deviate one little bit.
Move along people: Nothing's changed.

"you cant talk to anyone"
That's right, didn't he know the unclean are to be seen and ignored. How dare he show any human appreciation for a kindness done!
Really, what a louse that elder is!

Actually, a DF'ed person is free to talk to anyone they want to talk to. It is the faithful JW that must not talk to THEM. Even there, they play the cat-and-mouse game of saying that people CHOOSE to shun the person. We all know that's nonsense.
If you want to be reinstated, yes- you have to play the silent game. But what an ass-hat for shooting someone down for saying "Thank you."

When I used to do the literature counter, a DF'd man used to come over to get his stuff. He always engaged me in more conversation than I was supposed to be involved in, but I just couldn't bring myself to be rude to him. Finally one of the elders told him to cut it out. So, who was rude? -

i dont know why--if a d/f person really needs to get back inside the cult---why not simply make contact with a literature cart attendant---in a different location / town----and start a bible study--attend a few meetings--and take it from there. see how it goes. just create a fake ID -

Well not that it will make a difference but the elder is wrong.
A person saying excuse me when they sneeze or step on someones foot - or a thank you is not breaking their restrictions as one disfellowshipped.
Its conversation that is "unscriptural" according to them. This would be anything conversational however brief, including saying a "greeting" such as "Hello" or "How Are You?" .
So they Pharisee elder just gulped a camel and strained at a gnat. He doesnt even know the finer technacalities of his own rules he is entrusted with enforcing.

I was thinking what millie210 said. Saying "thank you", etc. is just common courtesy; it is not part of a conversation. As an elder, I would have actually thought it good for the DFed one to say thank you. It would have indicated to me positive things such as lack of bitterness. -

If they want to get back they probably believe it is the "truth", and don't forget Jehovah sees EVERYTHING so they have to play the game by the "rules"... :/
