    Sentinel,

Good thinking starting this thread. A few years ago, after a couple of rounds of very bad cases of the flu, my Mom who is in her 50's started getting her yearly shot. It really has made a difference.

This month I have already had a mild case of the flu and she recommended that I get a shot. They are being offered several places in my town. We have a large retiree population so they are really pushed here. Still, I'm not sure about getting one. I guess I always felt like it was for "old" people (please don't throw rocks at me).

I'm am wondering if the benefits outweigh the risks?

This is a very good topic--and timely! I have never gotten a flu shot, despite their being free here at work, being 55, and having had cancer and chemotherapy.

My reasons now are that I haven't had the flu in at least ten years, and a bad flu in over 20 years. And, despite it being unscientific, I've heard of too many cases of people getting bad cases of flu after getting the shot.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

I just checked here, and saw even more replies. For the most part it seems, the benefits far outweigh any serious concerns folks might have about side affects.

It has been raining for most of three days here in Northern Virginia, and suddenly the temps went from the 90's down to the 30's, so if I do get sick in the next week, it will probably be a cold. This evening, my arm is very sore. There is a very large red spot where I got the shot, and it's hot to the touch. I really am not feeling so great. I'm pampering myself with cold compress and tylenol. If this continues, guess I will call the doctor and see what's up. I want to be tip-top for our vacation next month.

I think it's nice of employers who make the vaccine available to their workers. You are fortunate, Lew, to have that benefit. Obviously they are a good group and take care of their people.

Mouthy, I didn't realize you are 75! Hats off to you coming aboard the forum. (my JW mom who shuns me is 78) I don't believe you are "mouthy" though, I don't care what anyone says.

Pat, they tell me that even if we get sick, that it isn't the shot that does it; it's simply "that time of year", and their are so many viruses. The shot is supposed to keep you from getting the worst strain in the area of the world you reside in. Remember the Hong Kong Flu? (Whenever doctors don't know what you have, they always call it a virus anyway. )

Well, best wishes to all of you. I hope we all stay well this season, that's for sure.

Truth be known, Karen, I believe my employer has an ulterior motive. THe shots are much cheaoer than any of us missing up to a week of work. All in all, though, I do believe I work for a pretty good dealer. That's why I've been there 13 years.

Hey Lew, you said you work for a good dealer? Is that a poker club? Heh, heh.

    Sentinel you said:

The way it was explained to me was that they give you a dead virus that you get antibodies to. This makes it impossible to catch the flu from the shot, because the virus is dead.

NOOO never had one, never will.

For one thing it's last years flu that's in those shots. I have an article around here somewhere actually I think it's in the car. Too many side effects, and I'd rather get the flu then what's in some of those vaccines. Do you know how they make those eeewwwwwww????
