I've never had a flu shot, but I have a touch of the flu right now. It started two days ago but thank god it isn't that bad. I had a slight fever the other day and achy muscles. Right now I just feel a little weak but it's almost past.
The reason I never got a flu shot is for the reasons stated already. I've heard it brings on flu like symptoms.
Shari
Do you get the shot? Do you think it really works? Are you concerned about side affects?
Yep. (First time. Itz free from my work.)
Dunno.
Not really.
Howdy Sentinel~
I wondered why your arm was so sore and now I know.I never get the flu shot and have had a bad flu only once that I remember. Most persons I know get very sick when they get the shot.Pros and cons abound...

A surprising number of negative views here about the flu shot. Anyone know if the ratio of negativity here equals the negativity in the general population?
Is the negativity here the result of "left-over" negativity about flu shots among JWs? You all do remember such negativity in the JW world as a result of the campaign by the WT/Consolation in the first half of the 20 th century against every sort of immunization (vaccines)?
It is a scientific fact that flu shots help far more people than they hurt. The older, sicker, more feeble a person is the more they will benefit from vaccines, including flu shots. My physician gets a flu shot and, of course, recommends it for me and I have already gotten mine.
Older persons (above 50) should also get a pneumonia shot every five (5) years.
Since I work at a hospital, my union and the hospital requires that all employees have a flu shot every year. I've only ever had mild side effects - minimal swelling at the injection site and some discomfort that's easily solved with Tylenol.
However, this year I think the bug got me before I could get it with the shot. I've been sick for the last three days with flu symptoms, and missed two days of work. There's nothing worse than feeling faint, turning white and then puking your guts out in front of your workmates.

Scully,
Sorry to hear you've been sick You said:

Unless perhaps it's feeling faint, turning white, and then puking your guts out on your workmates?

Sam,
You make a very good point. I was in grammar school when (late 50's early 60's) when all the various vaccinations became a requirement for attending public schools.
My mother (annointed) and a once avid reader of the 'Golden Age' mag, insisted that I refrain from being vaccinated on religious grounds. So I never had any of the required shots.
Mom also believed in other Golden Age inspired stuff like, never using aluminum pans to cook in, eating whole wheat bread, "white ending up as a ball of dough in your stomach" , power of honey and lemon to cure all ills(not sure if CTR was in on this one), and other various wt inspired health codes.
Btw I got my first 'flu shot' ever yesterday morning.

I find the paranoia over the flu shot amusing as well. JW's tend to be overly critical of conventional medicine while going overboard on the vitamins and other non-conventional stuff. Like Sam said, this could be left over JW thinking where vaccinations were viewed as bad, organ transplants were cannibalism and where we believed trained doctors were trying to kill us with blood transfusions.
Much of people's fears surrounding the flu shot are based on myth. I got mine 5 days ago. For me it just makes good business sense if you work for yourself to try to avoid days off due to sickness.

I got a flu shot this year for the very first time. My arm hurt only for about 1/2 hour after the injection as the serum worked its way through my system, and that was it!!!
I had a really bad flu last year that came back several weeks later, so when my dr. asked me if I'd had one this year and suggest that I get it, I trusted her advice. It helped when she said that she was making sure her entire family (her husband is a dr. and her kids are my kids' ages) was vacinnated this year. This is the first time that she has suggested the shot for all of us. I figure something's up, and I'm a-listenin'! I really respect her, and so that's that!
So far, unfortunately, only I have had my shot.... which means I'll be the healthy one holding hands and making lots of chicken soup this year if that doesn't change soon!
My husband's church was offering flu shots after mass last Sunday ... $15 ... given by the nurses in the parish, which I thought was nice.
