Beautiful flowers Wasa (btw, don't worry about the resolution, it looks romantic with the soft lighting)

I know what you mean about doing some small thing for yourself, even if money is tight. In the early 80's, my first marriage was dying a slow death, and I was the one who worked regularly. I was the one who was always trying to make the utility companies happy; and fit in small payments for the other financial responsibilities we had. And I was the one burning the candle at both ends, keeping up with housework, laundry, sewing my own clothes, and clothes for others, etc.

We certainly didn't have money to throw away. (And, let's just say, that "I" didn't throw the money away.) But, here are two things that I did for myself, at least once a week. I would go by the 7-11 and purchase one fresh red rose, and I would stop by the People's Drug Store, now known as CVS Pharmacy, when they still had the small restaurant/soda shop inside. Breakfast was really cheap, and every now and then, I would get an early start and get a good breakfast before going to work. It cost under three dollars.

Buying the beautiful rose, to have on my desk at work, really made me feel good; and treating myself to breakfast now and then, made me feel like there were some rewards to my situation in life. If there isn't anyone in our life doing these small things for us, then we need to do it ourselves, and there is nothing wrong with that.

I have always loved fresh flowers, and my present husband sometimes get's some for me for absolutely no reason. And, if I'm having a bad day over some life event that I have no control over, I will still go to the Giant store and pick up some carnations for myself. (Carnations last a really long time.) And, I can go out to lunch during the day, and I can even treat a friend to lunch if it's their BD.

Things really changed for me when I left the JW's and when I followed that up by letting go of my first marriage after fourteen years. I'm finally at a place in life, where I don't have all those financial worries, and I have a life-mate who works right beside me in everything we do. But, now we will have to think once again of tightening our belts, to prepare for retirement. Life is like that.
