When they ask when I'm returning to the meetings I'll tell them soon, very soon. I'll define soon when they define what they mean by soon.

Very good benext !! I will remember that.

Our son was born in 1967, and his mother and I were told he might not have to go to school in this old system of things. Guess what, he is now 35 and holds a masters degree in english. Go Figure.

I really enjoy your posts Metatron,

A while back I challenged our resident doomsayer, You Know, to meet me after another 40 years (if we can both still get around due to our advanced ages by that time, that is) to share a friendly drink while he admits he was wrong about the Big A coming any day now 40 years past. This was just a little wager of his humility all in good fun so we could have a laugh together about it but You Know wasn't very interested in the odds despite his supposed confidence that Ol'Jehoover's Day of Wrath is due real soon. I don't want to rub anybody's nose in it too much because 30 years ago I was just as convinced that I'd never get old and have to watch my parents and loved ones die of old age either but I will readily admit today that I was a fool for having believed in this nonsense. If I had a dime for every time I heard, "This Wicked Old System can't possibly last even two more years at the rate things are going!", I'd be a very rich man. Apparently this "Wicked System" is like the Energizer Bunny because it just keeps on going and going and going....unlike the wasted lives of JWs who miss out on a real life while waiting on the pipe dreams of The Governing Idiots.

Better yet, ask them if they would be willing to bet their FAITH on it. If they are so sure that it's so soon, challenge them to quit the religion in 10 years if everything is still business as usual. I remember my step mom when I quit in '94 telling me "you'd better come back soon, it's not far off, look for the signs, you know what they are." Well, shit in the Middle East hasn't gotten one bit more peaceful since then so I doubt anyone will be saying "peace and security" anytime soon. Guess I have a few more years to enjoy living before I have to come back to "the truth."

I've often wondered about bets with Armageddon/Rapture doomsayers, and I've always found one fatal flaw with the concept - it's unfair! Even if they win, they never get to collect - you'll be dead, or they'll be raptured. IOW, the bet is rigged in the favour of those of us who are healthily skeptical about end-times date-setting. I'm all in favour of making people commit to their wild statements, but their chance to redeem their view must be fair.

I had more success with something else - in 1996 I said to a JW at the door: "Within 5 to 10 years, the blood doctrine will be no more". He said that it's Biblical, and the GB would never change it. I said: "Can you give me something to that effect in writing?" What do you think his answer was? BTW, my prediction still has a few years left; I wonder if I'll turn out to be a better predictor of the future than the GB?

environmental doomsayers and won the bet from Paul Ehrlich)

You gotta love old Julian: he kicked Erlich's arse!

I think any JW that is mature would look you straight in the eye and tell you that it does not matter....that they are serving Jehovah becuase it is the right thing to do and not because they think the end is next week...and that if they knew the date, then a lot of phonies would all of a sudden try to latch on.

thats what I would have said 10 years ago if you asked me....
